I'm very excited. It's gonna be great, there's a lot of depth from what I've seen so far. A lot of people think it's Overwatch with creeps and don't seem to understand that it's supposed to be a slow macro fast micro competitive game that will require a lot of hours to learn like DOTA.
The only people who are pushing back are the guys who hate everything and say things like "goyslop" about any new game, and the rabid diehard TF2 community that refuses to let their necrotic dress up game die. I love hero shooters and have always had faith in Valve to make good games. (Artifact was good, just not popular)
The artstyle is sick in a subtle way, very stylish. One of the issues with "Early Access" games these days is that a lot of games use it as a way to release their game while generating hype from streamers. When a game ACTUALLY is released in a "beta test" phase, idiots don't really get the concept that it's not finished and complain that it looks and feels unfinished...no shit.
As far as DEI shit goes, I don't really see it. I have my own criticisms of the direction Valve is taking with regards to playing towards mass appeal, but as long as the internal company culture and development process stays relatively unchanged, I have faith in the quality of the games themselves. They seem to be marketing more towards mass appeal rather than pandering towards woke demographics. The fact that the game is a hero shooter with DOTA gameplay and Half-Life aesthetics is, to me, a sign that they're putting a lot of resources into this and trying to take aspects of everything that made their previous games successful and capitalizing on the Valve strong suits. I'm honestly a little surprised that they're going with a darker tone, as a lot of the signature Valve (Reddit) humor is missing in the dialogue. I assume this is deliberate however, since every major media property has a "bright cartoony" version and "dark gritty" alternative. This is while an obvious attempt at capitalizing on the market vacuum of good hero shooters, meant to attract players that prefer DOTA to League and CS to Apex. Valve art has always had a soft spot for 1940s-60s aesthetics.
What could kill this game in my opinion is the lack of advertising. Valve needs to understand that, like Nintendo, their reputational power depends on nostalgia (likely another reason they went with the artstyle) and can no longer expect to release a game out of the blue with no marketing and get numbers. A depthy game is a slow burn in both gaining popularity and losing it. A case study like GIGANTIC shows that even if you have a dedicated nostalgic fanbase, you can quickly die out if the game doesn't have that feeling of excitement and wanting to play when you aren't. I want to be excited about new builds and clever ideas and want to rush back to my PC to play another round. If they could do it with a genre like MOBAs I don't doubt that they can repeat it with a MOBA disguised as a hero shooter (like Overwatch). A company that large will be able to support the game and consistently release new heroes, items, big patches, etc. The big concern is "Can Valve release a game that isnt a sequel to their other games without massive backlash?". I think so, but they need to market the fuck out of it and make it feel and look like a Valve game (and not DOTA auto chess).
Also, Karen Laur is a nice lady.
