Dick said he looked up to Maddox as being an OG Troll and slowly grew to resent him over time, particularly because Maddox basically sabotaged projects they both put a lot of time and money into. This matches up to the reality of the show. Dick was the biggest fan of Maddox's for the first two dozen episodes and over time their arguments became more cutting and Dick held back less.

While we're on this topic: I know Dick picking up Maddox's ex at a wedding was a major turning point in their relationship and Dick likes to wave it around as a victory over Maddox (while brushing off everything Maddox does as the deranged revenge plot of a jilted lover), and to me that makes it all the more interesting that the roles were actually reversed in an early episode of TBPitU. Maddox hit on an ex-girlfriend of Dick's and Dick was upset enough to confront him about it on the show. Maddox responded saying he didn't realize they had "a thing" like that and apologized. It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but knowing everything that happens afterwards, this exchange stands out a little more now.
