Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

This is fresh from my spreadsheet. It's partially a list of things I own which is why there are things like DQ1-4 duplicated as DW1-4 and Akumajou Densetsu is listed instead of Castlevania 3.

Some of the names are translations of Japanese games which are direct, others are more "localized" ones that a fan translator provided.

Just to call out one thing I added recently: Samurai Pizza Cats is a very liberal fan translation of Kyattou Ninden Teyandee, just as the show is. I think the result is pretty neat: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1741/
Yo this is so awesome! Thank you! Looks like I actually have a pretty good chunk to play, I've played about 35 of the games on this list, and most of those are the big series stuff (all the Dragon Quest and FF games, all the Mega Man games, etc.)

I'll also take a look at Samurai Pizza Cats, looks like a fun time.

If you have any more of these for other consoles please let me know! It's awesome seeing console game lists that aren't just the same like 20 games everyone on planet earth has played.

I guess for my lil tax for two NES games for you to try, might be hard to find to physically collect though.

Destiny of an Emperor as I mentioned earlier: Kind of a Dragon Quest clone but has a pretty unique combat system and a fuck ton of characters, like 40+, also a sequel but I haven't played that so can't vouch for it's quality. This one is officially localized but idk how much it would go for.

Yume Penguin Monogatari: Really weird game where you play as a penguin and try to avoid food so you don't get fat and become a reddit mod that gets cucked by a gigachad penguin. I remember it got pretty challenging near the end but it was a fun like hour long romp. No official translation but has a fan translation here!

As far as my own retro gaming, I've finally started playing Advance Wars, pretty awesome game, just beat the campaign for the first time, going through it again to unlock some extra COs before I take on the War Room Maps. I definetly need to try more strategy games out.

This is fresh from my spreadsheet.
Good list. Games I like that I'd add:
  • Uninvited
  • Solomon's Key
    • Fire & Ice (sequel)
  • Lode Runner (alternatively, Lode Runner on PS1)
  • Qix (alternatively, Qix Neo on PS1)
  • The Goonies II
  • Millipede
  • Donkey Kong 3
  • Journey to Silius
  • The Guardian Legend
  • Streemerz (this is a freeware ROM)
  • Mighty Final Fight

If you're just looking for new stuff what I like to do is go on CDRomance and filter by platform for English Patched games. They're sorted by default by recently of patch so you'll pretty quickly find games you've not heard of that are really good. The owner of that site is really quick about updating to new pre-patched games too, it's something I check once a week or so to keep up (and the interface is a lot better than Romhacking).

The best thing about PS1 is how experimental the games of that era were.
I think the Dreamcast was the real experimental console, tons of games there were not quite PSX era/not quite PS2 era and had some ideas that inspired new genres and others that were left on the wayside. Is basically why that console is so well remembered despite only lasting 2-3 years.
And I say this as someone that overall thinks the next gen with PS2/GC/Xbox is the all time peak.
Nah I think the X360/PS3 was peak, its when we finally sort of reached photorealism and there was still tons of innovation in game design. Problem is right after it all went off a cliff and we're still falling.

But yeah nothing will ever top the fall 2004 lineup.
There's a lot of combat 3d platformers going under different genre titles.
Recommend a few.
They also patented Virtua Racing's Camera Change effects.
That explains why no other games did it, tho its been over 30 years so that patent must've expired.

PS1 is way more experimental in ways the dreamcast wasn't. The dreamcast is very quirky, it's a weird relic of arcade (sega) style games and even it's big adventure games like Sonic Adventure still retain a sense of arcade gameplay within them. It's a great console and it's one emulation will always be fun to explore but it's not got anything like early PS1 experimentation on it. Stuff like Mr. Domino stands out in ways the dreamcast never quite hit.

The DC is also a late-90s boom economy, pre-9/11 console (it was discontinued before then) that primarily competed with the PS1. Many of its games are enhanced ports of PS1 or N64 games. It's honestly weird to me that people try to lump it in with the PS2 era.

Because it's release date is closer to the PS2 than the PS1 and N64, it's like the Wii U, which despite being technically an 8th-gen console, it mostly ran 7th-gen games.

More PS3 emulation stuff.

While looking at "roms" for the PS3, I noticed a bunch of PS1 and PS2 games. PS1 games I assume are just emulated versions from PSN, but what about PS2? eg. I don't remember Haunting Ground having a PS3. I assume they're just emulated, but thought I'd make sure.

Are there any PS3 games you guys would recommend I look into? When I asked elsewhere, people just said Armored Core and Demons Souls, because of course. I'm thinking Captain America, Operation Raccoon City, Afrika, and maybe Tokyo Jungle. Though I'm in no rush for any of these.

I've been pushing on with GT5, but the technical issues are annoying. I'm tempted to shelve it until the emulator has advanced some more. I do have a real, working PS3, so I could always play it on real hardware, and used prices aren't too bad. (Sub £10 though no word on disc quality, and no DLC)

but what about PS2?
PS3 depending on what model you got, could either do hardware PS2 or software PS2, so it's no surprise.

In fact, I had a PS3 for a VERY short time, and i remember seeing the Sly Cooper trilogy on the Playstation Store. Even bought it cause at the time i only had played the 2nd game on the actual PS2 and wanted to experience all of it.

PS2 there may be some HD ports but there were also full software emulated PS2 Classics on PS3. It's honestly a miracle those run as well as they do, some compatibility compromises but again a miracle. I ended up with a ton of Atlas PS2 Classics because they were on sale often, it's honestly a nice way to play some of those games.

For PS3 games try Drakengard 3, Eternal Sonata, Echochrome, Katamari Forever, Metal Gear Rising, Ni no Kuni, Resonance of Fate, and Tales of Graces F.

Any complaints about the Dreamcast at the time were generally in comparison to the PS2. Not having a DVD player was a big strike against it.

Tokyo Jungle is terrific, and exactly what I'd recommend. Resistance 3 is a very good FPS that's still an exclusive. I dunno, most of what I played on PS3 was multiplatform.

If a nigga finds Mario 3 unpalatable, there's no way they'll like even surface-level obscurities like Sweet Home.
Well, Anti-SMB3 Guy is going to bat for the likes of SMS Wonder Boy and Fantasy Zone. "Aged badly/nostalgia goggles/you had to be there" is just the standard line whenever somebody has a piping hot take on an old game, particularly from critics with a weak theory of mind. It may or may not reflect the consensus of today's misguided young people. I mean, from my limited experience, not all gen alphas are that allergic to flicker and black backgrounds.

I was talking games like Bart vs The Space Mutants, TMNT, and Strider, which are basically unplayable due to a mix of bad design and bad code. Battletoads literally can't be beat in 2 player mode because player 2 falls through the floor on a certain stage.
TMNT1 and Bart's Shovelware Adventure are some of the more famous lousy games (because of the licenses) and not what we have in mind when we go whiteknighting for the NES. The Battletoads bug is an outlier and tbh I could hardly imagine it coming up much irl... including 2-player mode in that game to begin with was kind of a sick prank.

Breddy gud list, except having TMNT1 but not TMNT2 looks like a typo. Funny thing though is I had already written up my own non-normie top list and most of it didn't make it onto yours:

  • Abadox
  • Attack Animal Gakuen
  • Gimmick
  • Gremlins 2
  • Gyruss
  • Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu
  • MiG-29: Soviet Fighter
  • Mighty Final Fight
  • Monster in My Pocket
  • Pac-Man CE
  • Shadowgate
  • Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti
  • Sweet Home
  • Wizards & Warriors

Whoops, we both forgot Kick Master and Kabuki Quantum Fighter. So, I'm not running out of games.

One of those games where if you die even once in the later stages, you're completely fucked. Can't touch the walls, and everything kills you with one hit.

It's a space shooter where you go into a planet that's sentient (even has a mouth), so you're practically fighting it's guts on the inside. All to save your girlfriend who may or may not have her tits out in the ending (the western release is censored). The perspective changes between left-right to up-down in each stage, of which there are 5 of them with 2 levels with a boss battle for each of them. Aside from the different weapons, there's also shield and barrier power-ups that absorb bullets and keep you living longer. You're real main condern is avoiding obsticles, and there comes a time where you would need to AVOID the speed-up power-up you get at the start of each stage otherwise you wind up going TOO fast even with a tap of the directional pad, which wil cause you to fly into something you didn't intendo to do.

I'd recommend it to anyone that likes those hard-as-balls toe-curling games. It was my first ever space shooter as a kid, and I enjoyed it for all it's faults. Music is breddy gewd.

Because it launched 2 years before PS2 in the west, and has graphics closer to PS2 than to PS1. The large amount of cross-gen titles is partially a result of poor support.

Genesis launched 2 years before SNES but nobody doubts they're from the same generation. Same for PS1 & N64. I'm actually baffled when people try to lump DC in with 5th gen.

PS2 there may be some HD ports but there were also full software emulated PS2 Classics on PS3. It's honestly a miracle those run as well as they do, some compatibility compromises but again a miracle.
They run well mostly because they're programmed to flush most of the system OS out of memory and run an absolute barebones version with the processor clocks cranked up and the emulator using Zsnes levels of per game patching, absolute miracle and the fact they can't do the same for PS3 on PS4 pro/PS5 is embarassing.

Ah yes all those PSX/N64 games like Quake 3 Arena, Soul Calibur, power stone, DOA2, RE code veronica, Half Life, slave zero, headhunter............the few cross-ports I could find it was the PC version of the game not the PSX. Even down at the hardware level the DC was much closer to the PS2 than the PSX. The AES which was far more powerful than any other 16bit console was still closer in power to the Genesis than the DC was to the PSX.

It's honestly weird to me that people try to lump it in with the PS2 era.
IIRC there were more ports between the DC and the PS2 than between the DC and the PSX, and some of the ports looked better on the DC, like DOA2. That's why, that and the specs.

The first fat PS3 models had a PS2 built-in, CPU and GPU, later models used software emulation which I been told was dogshit but IDK.

Tho good luck finding a fat unit that hasn't YLOD already.
Any complaints about the Dreamcast at the time were generally in comparison to the PS2. Not having a DVD player was a big strike against it.
I remember some SEGA guy saying they considered adding a DVD drive but then the price would have jumped from $199 to $249.........which would've still being cheap af for a DVD player att, the PS2 was already a steal at $299 for the same reason and its why Sony was able to move so many units at first since in a classic move now it had NO GAMES at launch. A DC with a DVD instead of a modem would've been way more successful, 56k was too weak for good online gaming and broadband was still years away from going mainstream.

Of course this is all obvious in hindsight, the DC launched at the height of the dotcom bubble and it being "internet-ready" seemed like a much better idea than a DVD when att you could barely get any movies in that format and few video rentals had any.
and even it's big adventure games like Sonic Adventure
The "adventure" part of SA1 was barely there and gone from SA2, should've used Skies of Arcadia as an example instead.

The experimental aspect of the PSX is less about wacky games like the DC and more that like I said they were moving into a new paradigm with 3D so devs were trying anything to see what works. Early games like Pandemonium are a good example of this.
What innovation? Even PS2 era wasn't all that innovative compared the PS1 era, it was largely about refinement.
I'll argue that control, camera and layout-wise PS2 era games are way closer not just to PS3 but even current games. GTAV plays pretty much like GTA3 did, but nothing like GTA1 or Driver did on the PSX, same with MGS2 to MGSV, MGS1 meanwhile plays more like the old 8bit Metal Gear games.

Like I said before the PSX was about learning how to make 3D games, it was experimental in the very sense of the word and not because they were trying to think outside the box for novelty's sake. Read the story about the first Crash Bandicoot game, NG spent as much time trying to figure out the gameplay as they did trying to get the PSX to display those graphics.

it was simply and emulator that had some issues. the slim models still have that emu available if you inject the PS2 games (which is how most people play GT4 on PS3). Even the SuperSlim has it. The reason it's not widely available is that Snoy had to cut costs and decided to "remove" that feature instead of fixing it. Only for them to waste an ungodly amount of money on the PSMove.

I think we've had this discourse already, but many of the lousy DC to PS2 ports were done by basically overworked interns at some made up studio, and the reason why everyone compares the DC to PS2 is the release date.
PlayStation 1: 1994 (jp), 1995 (worldwide);
Sega Dreamcast: 1998 (jp), 1999 (worldwide);
PlayStation 2: 2000 (JP, NA, EU, AU); It was also announced in 1999.
Contrary to countrarian's belief, the Dreamcast sold well in Japan, it even gave the PS2 a hard time during it's first year of release. The reason it flopped can be summarized in "Sega is managed by lolcows". Even the DVD Player shit didn't hurt the Dreamcast as much as all the finer details from the DC itself.

Nah, the Dreamcast is a 6th generation console because it´s was the first to make the jump. The graphical fidelity and 60fps (at least in most of the SEGA arcade ports, like Virtua Tennis 1 & 2, F355 Challenge and i think Crazy Taxi) was impressive.

Hell i remember how Soul Calibur looked against Soul Blade (the PS1 ver.) and it was night and day.

Dreamcast was, strangely, a console that nobody cared 10/12 years ago (when i bought mine) and when the 20 aniversary came, the prices went to the fucking roof, making almost impossible to get one, mosly at the same price of a SEGA Saturn, at least where i live.

Dreamcast also has a fucking ton of games from CAPCOM, Resident Evil 2 & 3, Code Veronica, Street Fighter Alpha 3 (And 3rd Strike) Power Stone, Dino Crisis, Jojo, Project Justice. The best part of it that emulating Dreamcast now is super easy with ReDream or Demul.

Sega gets much less attention than Nintendo and the Dreamcast (and gamecube) both suffer from most of their big titles being multi platform. The dreamcast has 70 exclusive titles and only 4 of them are anything people remember. Toy commander, Pen pen, Crazy Taxi 2 and Blue Stinger. The system is great but it's all on the ps2 as well so people pick up the better versions.
