It's a GUNDAAAAAAAAM. Your general Gundam natter thread!

Watched some clips of Freedom and its convincing me to watch SEED again. The DRAGOONs dueling into the transformation of Mighty Strike Freedom and then Lacus waving her hand as the targeting computer appears, peak AU Gundam.
Watch the whole movie. Athrun, Luna, and Shinn did great in it, Kira is allowed to be flawed, the halfway point is really sad, and the new mobile suits are very cool.
Superior Raideen, Dagwon, Wing, Samurai Troopers, etc. Lots of handsome boys grappling each other and very suggestive promo art. All of which had big female fanbases. Hell, two different directors from the Brave series went on to direct BL shows.
Sca-red Rider Xechs is another anime like that, and it's very good. They have cool bikes and a cool transforming airship with a good endgame, even if there is a lot of talkahol. And I hope you're talking about Fukuda (he was the chief director of Exkaiser) yaoibaiting in SEED because Yatabe doesn't count.
Women were a big enough audience to turn it into a franchise in the first place. Without women, 0079 would've likely fallen into obscurity after being canceled.
Could you imagine if that happened? 0079 would have been fansubbed in the 2010s as a "surprisingly dark silly 70s robot show you've never heard of" like Baldios or Vifam, the Muteki trilogy may have gotten a fourth show (which would have been Sunrise's last mecha show) and all mecha henceforth would be Time Bokan entries or focused on fembots, Nanako SOS would have been as revered/important as Mazinger, Creamy Mami would have developed Symphogear levels of lore and become a major franchise, Gekisatsu Uchuuken would have been made (and many other Lemon People manga would have gotten TV shows), and Mushoku Tensei would be one of the least degenerate modern anime. Thank god for fujos.

Here's a scarier thought, if America's attempt took off somehow
Or if South Korea's version which incorporated an unlicensed version of Macross and Brave Raideen took off

And either of them are unfortunately America's exposure to Gundam, how does it affect the series releases further, does it get stuck in that copyright limbo like Macross?

I wouldn't have minded Doozy Bots. It seems like a sassy SD Gundam Force, and it could have been good because we would have gotten more SD shows that aren't Romance of the Three Kingdoms retreads. And some of those Korean movies are decent because one of them is the only Diaclone media we have.

One effect that might happen is we get an entire fanbase that would claim Gundam was always a Korean framchise or they would look at Macross and get confused.

I like how Space Gundam V is clearly the Takatoku version of the toy (well, the Joons one)

Yatabe was indeed one of the ones I was referring to. Takamatsu is the other. Takamatsu's yaoibait anime are a lot more tame than Yatabe's most notorious work though.

Having ruminated on SEED Destiny/Freedom a bit more, here's what I have to say about some of their criticisms:
  • Shinn's treatment at the end of Destiny isn't some massive character assassination or whatever, especially considering he still got a happy fairy tale ending. It's the natural consequence of his actions. He decided that his grudge against Orb was more important than doing the right thing. Ultimately, he decided to be nothing more than an expendable fighter on the side of evil, and evil should never be seen as anything more than an obstacle to defeat. Too bad, so sad. It's a more accurate, objective take on Kamille's actions near the end of Zeta, especially considering Char's true intent throughout. Shinn may have been sympathetic towards Stella, but she was mentally a child. Only a cartoonishly evil sociopath wouldn't have taken care of Stella. Doing the bare minimum of being a good person isn't some shining achievement, and Destiny doesn't treat it as such.
  • Mu getting absolved of his sins as Neo isn't stupid. Those actions really weren't his choice, so he shouldn't have to pay the price.
  • The Earth Alliance experimenting with human modification is hypocritical, and that's the whole point. The "preservation of our blue and pure world" stuff is propaganda to cover Naturals' insecurities about being made obsolete by Coordinators, and this is a very myopic, childish position to take because Naturals do have their place alongside Coordinators, even if it's not the coolest or most glamourous position.
  • Lacus denouncing the Destiny Plan and talking about how important organic love is, despite becoming a leader as she was engineered to be, isn't a cope. The only path to peace (Coordinators finding tolerance alongside Naturals while accepting that both species have their own strengths and weaknesses) is a sort of Destiny Plan itself. We already know that the Destiny Plan works wonderfully if it's not used to oppress people, so making people occupy certain positions according to genetic determinism isn't bad. Under that scheme, true love is possible because there will be no pressure to love someone to fulfill an unnatural social order driven by hypocrisy and greed.

The Earth Alliance is not the ones experimenting with human modification.

If you put together all the pieces, even without novels and shit, you realize that all the wars in SEEDverse is the result of the Illuminati-like LOGOS, which controlled humanity, splintering in two, because the gene modification technology allowing ot create superhumans came online far before the rejuvenation technology and mind-wiring for obedience (we've seen Aura implementing both of those, and even then in an imperfect form; we've also seen that brainwashing methods used on either Mu or the Sleepers are not reliable/have terrible drawbacks, but this just continues the theme of ALL their human modification technologies being unreliable and having terrible drawbacks, due to being deployed too hasilty, such as Coordinators' infertility in the second generation, or clone degradation). So, old fucks who controlled the main body of the conspiracy got jelly and afraid of their superhuman creations. They have created the Blue Cosmos as their dupes and furnished them with the advanced technologies. Druggies, Sleepers, and all the advanced Gundams clearly come from LOGOS' through their Blue Cosmos cover. The Earth Alliance's countries were not directly controlled by LOGOS/Blue Cosmos, but too heavily depended on them for their military tech to offer more than passive resistance to their demands.

And Gilbert, by the way, almost certainly was the leader of LOGOS' space branch that went rogue after realizing that the Earth branch actually wants to kill them all. His revelation of LOGOS was clearly true, because the conspirators themselves did not dispute it, yet there was no way for him to know this information all along, without himself being a part of the conspiracy. Certainly he was never shown obtaining it. The movie adds more evidence, showing that he was Aura's best buddy, even if their schemes diverged enough that she left him to struggle and fall on his own and did not employ her massive resources to support his version of the Destiny Plan.

So, you can say that SEEDverse did 00 before 00, except more realistically.

"Wait a minute..."

So they released a lot more details about the VR game silver phantom.

https://youtu.be/RmBs8rHkcQc?si=iaO4EgMhVGVjonnD. (I'll never not be annoyed that the insert bar doesn't work on my phone)

It seems like it they put a good chunk of change in it. It's bring billed as the first fully VR feature film and there appears to be some actual narrative interaction. (Although I'm not sure if it's just choosing how to use the suit or if you can talk to people and ask questions.)

It's nice to actually see a Gundam game that attempts a role-play situation as opposed to just being a mindless shooter.

The plot looks really cool. You're part of a mercenary PMC group hired to be assassins by the federation before all hell breaks loose. Looks like you have to start picking sides and do whatever it takes to survive.

Banagher might be involved. His voice actor was doing some narration and this is the same year as the events of unicorn. I just don't know if there's enough time at the end of the year for them to show up.

There's also a mode where you can play with your Mecha action figure style with your hands? It kinda reminds me a tiny bit of zone of enders.

Well, Banagher is going to be the "voice" of UC going forward. At least until the heat around Furuya dies down, I'd expect a lot more Banagher. Especially if something's set in the 0090s. Probably a lot more Ikeda too.

I am 100 percent onboard with banagher being the new face of the franchise.

Supporting this, They recently did a whole non cannon crossover in UC engage with him seabook and Uso fighting zanscare. (They were not aged up but I liked how their suits were modified)

I like the idea of him becoming a sort of emyia shirou putting out fires in the background of the UC and dealing with the stress

Oh fuck no, this franchise is obnoxious and repetitive enough without having a though-terminating-catchphrase Shirou Emiya as a recurring character.
Even so! Banagher didn't make some big tiddy thot kill her baby. So, he'll get to show up a bit more. Maybe by the time the next anniversary hits, Furuya will be allowed to come out and play.

Until then: You WILL listen to every sora demo. You WILL buy the new Unicorn gunpla with the new hyper mega launcher.

Christ does he ever. He keeps yelling it at people who refuse to stop fighting in an active warzone where everyone wants everyone else dead, mostly towards Neo Neo Neo Zeeks who commit terrorism because they have nothing better to do with their time. He tries to defuse a civilian-murdering Cyber-Newtype by saying the catchphrase at her in episode 4, which of course doesn't work and the chick gets the Four fate of needing his rival Riddhe to kill her for Banagher. There's a Puru clone called Marida who goes back and forth between being a good guy and bad guy because LOL Cyber-Newtypes, and any time she turns good it's because Banagher yells his catchphrase at her because this chick is so brainless she melts down Heero-style because "I must destroy the Gundam...but now I'M piloting a Gundam!". Eventually the thought termination gets to her so badly that she kills herself to turn Riddhe into a good guy and power up Banagher through the power of dead Newtype Girlfriends.

I wish Cyber-Newtypes never existed. They're an uninspired plague on the mecha genre and Gundam in particular (Seriously, why are we supposed to care about Stella or Rita when they have no identity?) and the only one that ever worked was Carris because X's writers deliberately avoided the usual Forever Four script. Puru ALMOST worked, but then ZZ killed her off to replace her with a lazier retread in Puru Two.

Banagher as the new voice of gundam...i dig it. I can see him being the "Modern Amuro" for the new generation. Like inevitably we are gonna shift so might as well start now. That said im suprise they didnt make Suletta instead since the japs can gain brownie points with the westerners.

So am I. Suletta becoming the new mascot of Gundam would have been the smartest business decision since a woman will never get caught as a sexual abuser, they can get moe anime fans to watch Gundam, and they can pretend to be progressive. However, the UC is the most established timeline, so they can't really blacklist the UC (but they could do that weird early development thing where G-Witch is connected to IBO and build a new universe from that -- an absolutely horrifying thought). I wish they made Hathaway or Uso the new face of UC; we don't need to continue harping on Unicorn when there are better post-CCA stories and characters to use.

Nanrise hates the West and they also hate G-Witch. What the hell are you on? You assume because Nanrise hates you and you hate SJWs that Nanrise would pander to the SJWs to spite you?
