It's a tough one to call. On the one hand, something feels off about it. On the other, this is exactly the kind of thing SBI and co. do.
It's tricky because one side is doing the typical "Source! Source! Where's the receipts!" thing and then moving the goal posts whenever they're provided. The other seems to be attracting opportunistic political grifters trying to make consooming product into some weird show of support. The language barrier isn't helping, with wildly different translations depending on who you ask.
But ultimately, I don't think it's important anyway. Let's say it's all true. Monkey game devs said "no" to SBI. That's not enough to get me to buy a game, and despite claims the game looks awesome, I've not seen much of any gameplay, and what little I have seen looks bland and generic.

This is something I'm considering making a general thread on, because there's been a running theme of trying to push wokeshit when viable alternatives exist instead of when they had control.
With games it makes sense. They were unimportant distractions and go into the media late.
With films and TV, it was Hollywood studios and 4-5 channels run out of London and that was it. Agreed. There's another factor is the Journey to the West fatigue. If you live anywhere close to the sinosphere, you'll be exposed to Journey to the West one way or another, be it from a TV show, literature study or reference in other media, so much so that at some point you'll get tired of the same story being told over and over again. Whatever the twist they have in place for the story is yet to be seen and the gameplay is so-so.
I'd recommend the 1986 TV series of Journey to the West, it has a lot of charm of it's time, still hold up decently today and the main reason why Monkey King is popular in China in the first place. It should be a good reference point outside of reading the translated novel to judge how good or bad Black Myth Wukong writing is.
