I think why people cling to TF2 is cause of this experience. There are no dedicated servers, no communities, no casual hangouts, no "you need to be clocked in to be part of the community, but don't need to tryhard, die, wait for the next round" etc. You could be 1:1 in TF2 and do well, yet also achieve 19:1.

Realistically speaking if Valve is willing to do the "treadmill" work it might keep the amount of bots down. I'm curious if this is going to be a one off thing or if they'll stick to it

Fucking hell its painfully accurate. I occasionally hop onto community servers to relive the old days but they're long gone. I miss playing 24/7 lazytown with the gaggle of retards I used to play with.

Lazytown was one of the first custom maps for TF2. It was made before the modding tools were released and it was made to see if it was even possible to mod TF2 at the time. It wasn't meant to be a good map (hence the name Lazytown) but it took off in popularity for some years then faded into irrelevancy after Valve dealt a massive blow to community server player numbers with the casual queuing system.

RIP Lazytown, you absolute clusterfuck of a map. You deserved better.

I've been playing tf2 again the past couple days. There are a few vanilla servers and even though I suck with any class, I mostly still have a decent time. It's nice seeing some people on these servers who aren't complete faggots and I even saw an anti-trans sign being waved around.

The bots actually do appear to have been cleaned out for now. If they actually ban a good chunk of these bots off steam rather than just VACcing them, it will likely take a while for these fags to actually rebuild their ranks. How many years did Valve basically just let them continue to build up without properly getting rid of them? I'm not too sure they will be able to come back over night.

Don't get your hopes high, I'll give it a month or so before the Ruskies began rebuilding their Bot empire. and Knowing Valve, they'll be too busy monetizing the ass out of Dota again to care about the Bots resurgence, until fast forwarding into the next decade where the community started another #saveTF2 campaign.

I have a little experience with game servers so setting one up might be cool but I've struggled in the past getting the vm to load the server software properly and installing sourcemod. I'd definitely throw some some money at anyone competent enough to do the setup instead to cover hosting and stuff. My preference is probably just vanilla gameplay with sprays enabled and maybe some kiwi-ish maps thrown into the pool. Everything else, crits, bullet spread, class limits, player collision, round start explosives, votes, sv_pure, is all pretty much negotiable.

if you're talking about how should a kiwi tf2 server should be hosted, it's best to go simple with it and stick to vanilla, the only thing to set up i'd say are

1. a method to nominate and rtv maps, if you know how konata.tf plays, you know that it's incredibly cancer to skip dogshit maps, and by the time it's done, the entire server has most likely fucked off to nevermore, and if there's fears of a trannytopia situation find a way to increase the cooldown on the map choice.
2. a basic cheat tool and anti-ddossing to prevent exceptional shitting, past that it's better to have a free-for-all on what's said on chat, the main appeal of the server should be the freedom of speech part of it.
3. sv_pure 0 or a super lax sv_pure 1, easy to guess why
4. more of a personal opinion, i'd say to keep random crits on and keep random spread off so non-panic attack shotguns don't behave like blunderbusses, past this, better to leave it as vanilla as humanly possible, no class limits, no friendly fire, no rebalances, no custom weapons, nada of such.

the biggest issue instead is to manage what servers to pick, since i'd be inclined to believe that there's euros, americans and even asians that see both of these threads.
