This has crossover with some makerspace YouTubers but I think it's best to post this here because this thread might have better input.
Open Sauce 2024 just happened and there was some drama with manufacturer Bantam Tools.
Earlier this year, Evil Mad Scientists (EMS), the creators of the Axidraw pen plotter, was acquired by Bantam Tools and halted production on their old Axidraw robots. The Axidraw robots are built on open source and are quite fine machines in my opinion - robust, made in America, and easy to hack. With the EMS guys in their C Suite, Bantam tools releases a new machine called Nextdraw that is their updated Axidraw. There's some nice QOL upgrades but $700 is too steep. I haven't touched one myself, but some people I know that used it say that it is more closed source than before and harder to work with.
Anyways, Bantam tools set up shop at the fair and posted this tweet:

And also posted many other tweets of YouTubers alongside portraits drawn by their Nextdraw.
Then William Osman, the creator of Open Sauce claims that Bantam declined sponsorship to the event and snuck inside.

This tweet blew up with 100k+ likes and everyone trashes on Bantam. Bantams tweets gets community noted.

The Bantam account and CEO post an explanation, saying that they thought sponsorships were for giant companies and booths were for DIY creators, so they thought that they didn't fit in anywhere. They claim that they talked to the Open Sauce team for where they should go and the con team set them up there.

So that's it yea? Well no. People notice a suspicious piece of dialog under Bantams tweet

It
appears that a marketing employee at Bantam commanded a bot to praise and defend the company. So people try to hijack the bot account to expose it.

I doubt that Bantam actually commanded a bot to praise their company because Bantam's first tweet was made on June 15, 2024, Osman's tweet is posted on June 20, 2024 3:17pm, Bantam posts a response at 4:20pm, and then the bot shills Bantam at 5:13pm on the controversial tweet five days after it was posted, and then responds to itself.
Either way people are dunking on Bantam and even though it looks to be a misunderstanding, it will be a stain on their brand.
