The Soviets absolutely won in Afghanistan, that's not even a debate unless you're a retarded Ameriboo. The DRA/USSR's forces controlled most of the country except the mountainous edge that borders Pakistan, where the Taliban were coming into and out of the country...and that was still heavily contested. The Soviets didn't give the Taliban much rest whatsoever, it's why it took 3 years after the USSR withdrawing its troops and the CIA funneling a lot more money/guns/"advisors" into the Taliban for them to finally destroy the DRA. And the DRA didn't help by going a little too hardcore into purging religion from the more rural parts of Afghanistan, thus sending radicalized young men into the Taliban's training camps.
