I’ve found unless someone has used drugs, or had experience around druggies, they can be unbelievably naive. My husband had never used or been around hard drug users, except at a distance. (Bums on the streets, weirdos in bars) Several times I spotted people working under him a meth heads within one minute of interacting with them. He had spent two weeks working and just thought they talked a lot. My accuracy on spotting the druggie was proven 100%, he just had not been around them enough to spot it.

I'm a very grown person, and until I had some specific experiences (as an adult, and not even a young adult), I had zero ability to spot functional or even unfunctional addiction, and wouldn't even think to identify drug use. I know kids today are savvier than I was, but most people don't have direct experience with addiction off the rails, and even most kids of today I have known are fairly insulated and also protective of their families.

It was possible for a very long while to tell that Nick was doing some kind of stimulant. It was the question of which stimulant he was abusing that was the more complex and difficult part. Coke didn't seem to fit because the typical pattern would have involved many more breaks while streaming to do coke. He could have been doing meth. He could have been doing crushed up pills. But he was clearly mixing a strong stimulant with his heavy drinking.

There was also a reluctance to come to what I think at the time seemed at the time to be a really extreme conclusion (coke) without more direct evidence. At least to me, it was difficult at the time to believe Nick was dumb enough at his age to start a career as a full-blown cokehead and as well to mix it with heavy drinking given the health consequences of doing that.

But Nick really exceeded all expectations. At this point, nothing that could be claimed about Nick that would seem implausible.
