Age of Consent and Age Gaps - someone had to do it

I am so fucking sick of people arguing how old someone can be to be in a relationship and how big age gaps can be in cow and lolcow community threads. I'm posting this as a containment procedure for haram content.

What age gap is acceptable? What hard limit should there be for adults who enact a criminal offense? What age is fine for marriage? Should the age of consent be raised?

I think age gap relationships are inadvisable simply because you're at different life stages, but as long as everyone involved is 18 or older it's not really anyone else's business.

I doubt that there is an objective and non-arbitrary solution to the problem of age qualification
If that is the case, then it is equivalent to a matter of taste
Thus, if this is the case, I think the best solution is to not impose centralized legislation or regulation, but rather leave the matter as decentralized as possible, so that there is competition and legal diversification

I think it would be hilarious if 18 & 19 year olds were only allowed to marry people who are no more than 5 years older than them, and if 20-25 year olds could only marry people no more than 7 years older than them.

Edit: 16 years old should be the youngest someone could legally marry imo since that's the age most jobs can be worked. Even then, for 16 and 17 year olds, no more than 2 years older than them. More for teens trying to establish themselves away from their parents as much as possible and young pregnancies. I still rather it be 18 but I can compromise for this.

The truth is as long as we can agree on an age people should be prosecuted for pedophila, I am ok with not making laws for legal adults to fuck each other. I think it will be creepy if a 36 year old wants a freshly turned 18 year old, but I can't say that 18 year old isn't legally an adult. A hardline rule of "legal adults cannot fuck legal children aside from 18-19 year olds dating 16-17 year olds.

16 as minimum age for marriage is a good start yes

but i feel your post kind of misses the point, because 98% of the "he's a pedo!!" situations that spark these age of consent arguments are not about marriage, but about casual sex or informal dating. these informal and non-commital arrangements enable a lot of exploitative and manipulative behaviors, and those are what makes the whole thing so bad.
basically what i'm saying is that a 16 year old getting married to a 20 year old would be a lot less problematic than a 16 year old getting pumped and dumped by a 20 year old. the problem isn't the age gap itself, but the type of relationship that is taking place.

Of course there's nuance to this. It's obviously dodgy when an adult starts officially dating an 18 year old who they've known for years as a minor, but an older person dating someone who they first met as an 18 year old is clearly not the same thing as that.
