Patrick believes that the Republican party are not simply ignorant or incorrect, but actively malicious and evil. The Democrats, then, as the Republicans' primary opponents, are fumbling a supposed moral obligation by not using their political power to imprison and/or kill Republicans.

So he thought that since the Ds won't properly cover up Biden's deficiencies he, the very important sci-fi auteur and political thinker, would choose a side to represent good in his Manichaean mental landscape.
