In Pat's state Wisconsin the "smallest" legal is a .243. 5.66 is legal and will work with the short distance due to wood lines. EDIT - I reached out to the Ak owner. He's got a 5.66 and a 7.62 variant. Used the 7.62 for the hunt. Mea Culpa. You can find people with AK-47 style guns in the woods in WI. Due to the brush and shorter distances some hunters use a 30-30 in WI VS old vets using .308 or a 30-06 if they were trying to sit on a corn field. All of those rounds can be found in a deer camp in WI with the history being family guns passed down and a story of past hunting glory for every one of 'em.
Yeah, I didn't comment on WI cause I don't know the laws in that state. Even here in FL though, where I rarely harvest a deer at more than 200 yards, and usually much less I wouldn't be comfortable using 556.

Part of it is what you want to do with it - if you just want to kill a squirrel that's being a fuck, hit it as hard as you can with .50 BMJ who gives a fuck. If you want to eat the squirrel you need a smaller round.
Yeah, if I'm remembering correctly, the rationale was that a wounded enemy is almost always as equally out of the fight as a dead enemy, and sometimes would also be a further drain on resources.
This has been stated multiple times in this thread, and I have strong and direct experience to the contrary. Much depends on the bullet's weight and construction. A 55-grain pill, built to expand in small game, and from a 16-inch barrel, could easily wound without killing. A heavier jacket on a heavier round, fired from a standard 20-inch barrel, will do for small whitetail.

There's only so many fat hours in his fat day and the amount of people he needs to child is growing by the minute, much like he himself is, but him getting fatter won't make it easier to child more, it will in fact make it a lot harder.
