My point is, when things get rough, people turn to entertainment for escapism. The Simpsons managed to be tonally repulsive against the ideal American family by indirectly humoring its audience through reflection and social commentary. I haven't watched The Simpsons in years. My memory is a bit fuzzy. Again, how many shows/sitcoms then depicted an average American family in the same vein as The Simpsons? The status quo then was looser for entertainment to take risks with comedy and social commentary. It's not even about politics, it's about nuance. I'm sure liberalism wasn't worn on people's sleeves as a badge of honor; Americans were leaving the funk/disco era into raw, cool, no fucks given expressionism.

Also, I put "rebellious" in quotations with my original point. 90s era culture could've been seen that way in retrospective. I don't necessarily believe politics played a major factor into it. You had family friendly Nintendo with a new competitor of super cool Sega coming into the fray. You had basic clothing phasing out large, blocky clothing from the 80s. You had television and radio for the mindless to express themselves with little consequence. Trends change.
