I've seen Brave New World listed on a Libertarian reading list, but I would say it's more Reactionary than Libertarian given its themes and since Huxley mentions nothing about gun rights, he does not support recreational drug use, there is nothing in the novel about taxes, etc.

I always see people compare Brave New World and 1984 trying to debate which got it right when I feel the one that actually got it right is Fahrenheit 451. In it, Ray Bradbury precisely predicts our exact society. Everyone decides to ban books because they were politically incorrect and insulting, instead reading comic books and watching wall screens with interactive programming or listening to music through thimble sized radios in their ears. There is no community, and people barely know their neighbors, so they don't care when they die from an overdose or get run over at 120mph. Everyone is unhappy, but they can't bear to face the reasons why (their friends are dying and they're on the verge of nuclear destruction), so they turn to heroin and pills. People rarely have children, not because it's discouraged, but mostly because couples don't actually love each other. There isn't a totalitarian government like in Brave New World or 1984, in fact, all we know is the government here is incompetent, and the firemen and medics are implied to be private authorities. Despite books being banned, some firemen appear to be well read, but it only reaffirms their belief that it would be a waste of time, offensive, and unwanted by the normal person. The nuclear holocaust is inevitable after all, there's no use worrying about it-- except for Montag, this is what ended up saving his life. The moral is that reality (inconvenient truths, negative emotions, etc.) hurts, but we can't lock ourselves away from it or we will lose the critical thinking, empathy, clarity, and drive that makes us human.

It's a weird mind-set to even come up with it. Yes, it's an obnoxious and tasteless thing to say in and of itself. Particularly when a guest in the country that suffered it. But he actually calculated it based on relative population size. It's as if he thinks the number of people who died in 9/11 is less of a tragedy than if the same number die in Israel. What am I talking about with my "as if he..." Of course he thinks it's less of a tragedy.

If 60,000 people had died on September 11th I think yeah the US would have taken it a lot harder than it did with 3,000

The original plan in 1993 was to kill tens of thousands by taking down the towers in the middle of the day, not the morning, and instantly, with no time to evacuate people

60,000 people die of all sorts of thing every year. If you were alive at the time, the wall to wall 9/11 stuff was non-stop. Politicians, Celebrities, Musician tributes, advertisements, donation drives. And keep in mind I was in Australia. I imagine you Americans got that x10. It was the spectacle, the marketing.

The 60.000 are spread out over a long time though, all across the country, and usually don't die from something dramatic like a skyscraper blowing up or a plane crash into the pentagon.

I'm offended by the woman's phrasing. That weird leading "So I guess you won't be convinced to vote for a first woman president". When there is a woman president that is fairly elected, that will be a moment worth noting in history, but it's not some kind of elementary school program where you go "Well none of the girls have had a chance yet, let's have then try next."

There will be a fairly elected woman when there is a candidate worth voting for.

This seems like a fun conversation to me but probably not fitting for this thread so I'll simply say that when I said they have to support Israel I didn't mean monetarily, I meant like their position has to be pro-Israel.

Also, frankly, the only reason some playboy centerfold whose campaign is her unbuttoned shirt hasn't won the presidency yet is because neither the RNC or DNC has been smart enough to let one of those run for them yet and the lust factor alone isn't enough to overcome the deficit that indies have.

Marriage and monogamy aren't magical shields that make it so nothing bad or unplanned ever happens to you. Married couples and people who are celibate don't benefit from the government trying to restrict abortion.

The only one of these that comes anywhere close to being an acceptable excuse for abortion is the first one, and that is still the messy situation of a mercy killing, which are questionably ethical to begin with. I don't care if the family is too poor for a child, if the mother is too old to be bothered, if they don't want a kid, or if the woman was unwillingly impregnated. None of those justify killing the baby. If it was me, I'd ban abortion in 100% of cases unless the mother and baby were going to both die in childbirth, with legal consideration for situations where just the baby or just the mother will die in childbirth.

Alas. Neither party's presidency will give me what I want there, so I have to settle for voting for the 1% of abortions that come from rape and incest.

Bush wouldn't have been making no speeches about go to the mall and keep living your lives if it were 60,000. Instead it would've been buy war bonds, save for the 90% war taxes, and get ready for the draft
