My understanding is that Ukrainian is more a bastard of balkan-speak and polish than it is of Russian. Ukes know Russian because that's what was spoken in the UKSSR, and is still spoken in most of the country, not because of any surface similarities.

Ukrainian and Russian are related and mostly mutually intelligible. They're like Dutch and German - if you can speak German, you can mostly understand a Dutchman, though he pronounces shit weird and some words are different.

In the USSR times the only people in Ukraine speaking "Ukrainian" were peasants in the kolkhozes.

According to Reuters, in addition to the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain, the envelope with explosives was then received by the arms company that produced weapons for Ukraine, the office of the Prime Minister of Spain, the Ministry of Defense, the Torrejon de Ardoz airbase and the US Embassy in Spain.

Nah, the older generations in the Soviet republics had Russian in school. If you lived out in the countryside, you may have remembered a little, but in your every day life you got by speaking Georgian, Kazakh or whatever.

They don’t speak Russian today in a similar way in the ex Soviet republics. So why did over 50% of Ukraine keep speaking Russian unlike Armenians, Azeri, Tajiks or whatever?

Armenians speak Armenian between themselves but all are more or less fluent in Russian. It’s basically like English in Europe, everyone has their own language but English is a fallback they have in common.

I don't know if this has been posted before and I apologise if so, but I have recently read this college report on how Ukrainian agricultural is getting fucked by Western conglomerates and big business, if anyone has had doubts on the real reason why Ukraine is yet to (be allowed to) surrender.

Not seen it before here and it's exactly the sort of thing that is useful to me. I don't post in this thread much because most information I might add someone will already have done so. And it's also not a place where I need to persuade anybody. I add my comments in more normie places and a document like that is very handy to show to the non-convinced that there's more to this than "Putler mad! Zelensky heroic war leader."

I'd hate to be the commander of a unit full of convicts. The smart ones will realize there's no real chance of survival and turn on their command. Why not plug your CO and a couple sergeants? Your squadmates would gun you down almost instantly. I'd take that over getting my legs blown off by a mine and bleeding out in a field for 14 hours while being eaten by fire ants. I was about to say, like Feline, that it's not a bad deal because the second they get into live combat, these women will toss down their guns and sprint off to the other side.

They'll tell the Russians that they were forced into military service (Which is true-enough, I suppose), and be taken in as rescues. Then probably sent to Russia to tell the Russian populace how little Ukraine values its women.
