Well, unless you have either journalistic or educational credentials (like, actual credentials) then most likely you can get in trouble. The feds and police normally don't treat it like actual CP, but it's better safe than sorry (and also to never under any circumstance save it, never).

Some laws are like that, like how in a lot of states weed is still illegal but simply decriminalized. But that doesn't change the fact that the laws are still there and that they can get very nasty when they want to, as well as the fact that late 90s and early 2000s was almost entirely unregulated. Napster and the many anime shows that got reuploded to Youtube without any changes wouldn't have stayed there that long if the law was enforced

Lolicon is still a very complex issue in the United States. Despite the PROTECT Act being written in 2003, which I believe you’re referring to when you mention it “not being legal since the 2000s”, relies on the Miller Test to check for “obscenity”. As disgusting as this shit is, and those who enjoy it should be fed to the chipper, it’s still incorrect to say that it is strictly prohibited.

Also, the intent here would be to distribute chat logs, not the potentially infringing contents within. The contents could be stripped from the source, and then there would be no issue.
