A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The founding fathers of the US realized that the government's fear of it's population was paramount, and understood that very well, to the point that the very first parts of our constitution were specifically called out to allow the citizens to criticize the government, and to arm themselves against that very same government.

IIRC, those who didn't think to include them assumed that the rights outlined in them didn't need to be explicitly declared. Lawmakers from states who had rights outlined in their constitutions pushed to have them included.

I take your meaning, however. I think those first two rights in the Bill of Rights are critical, even though not long ago (PL) I lost a government position in violation of that first right.

Chief constables are to be given discretion to award the extra money to new constables’ starting salaries to help police forces compete with the private sector for new recruits.
The Government has accepted a recommendation by the police remuneration review body, which said police chiefs should be able to start new constables on £1,200 higher salary than normal. It comes on top of the 4.75 per cent increase in the basic salary of £33,324 a year agreed by Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
It is designed to help forces facing difficulties recruiting new officers at the same time as losing older policemen and women. The review body said it aimed to ensure the police service in England and Wales could maintain the uplift of 20,000 officers over the past three years by continuing to “recruit at volume.”

“It will assist those forces that are finding recruitment challenging and continue to boost the income of the lowest paid officers,” said the review body.
“We are conscious that over the last decade there has been a significant increase in the gap between private and public sector pay.
“This risks undermining the ability of the police service to recruit, retain and motivate high-calibre officers with the right attitudes to manage complexity, respond to vulnerability, de-escalate social tension, and build and sustain public trust and confidence.”
All 43 forces will be able to offer the extra pay to new recruits – which is made possible by allowing chief constables to put new constables on pay point 2, rather than pay point 1.
The Government has, however, rejected a recommendation by the review body for the Metropolitan Police to be able to offer a £4,000 “golden hello” by putting new recruits on pay point 3. Instead, the Government is proposing to raise the London allowance by £1,250.

It comes as the review body warned that the Met was short of 1,500 officers on its target of 35,415, which could put the safety of the public at risk, the pay review body has said.
“We are very aware of the operational and public safety risks of it not meeting its workforce,” said the review body. “We are very concerned about the immediate challenges the MPS faces in attracting officers of the right calibre with the right skills and attitudes and in the volume needed to address current shortfalls.
“We are alert to the operational risks and the implications for public safety that the MPS has told us may arise if the situation is not addressed.”
It said the MPS employed around a quarter of all the officers in England and Wales, accounted for a sixth of all crime, was the lead force for strategic threats such as terrorism and a third of county lines gang crime was linked to London.
The force is, however, still in special measures after inspectors uncovered a litany of systemic failings in fighting crime and serving victims.
The review body had recommended that Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, should be allowed to pay “golden hellos” of some £4,000 more than the normal starting salaries for new police constables in order to compete with the private sector.
However, it warned: “This measure could have implications for neighbouring forces and the constable pay scale as a whole. We therefore propose that this additional discretion be limited to two years with an initial review of the discretion after one year.”
The review body also warned that there had been an increase in the number of warranted police officers being placed in desk jobs normally carried out by police staff. This was because of the way funding for the 20,000 uplift had been geared towards recruiting front line officers.
Senior police chiefs have called for greater flexibility to allow them to recruit more police staff so they can switch officers into frontline roles.

They're getting a lot of time to prepare for it. That's well over a month away and the powers that be will try to spin this to quell tensions. It's clear that last night has them rattled and they want to put a stop to whatever's going on. I too have my doubts whether we have reached boiling point and people are beginning to snap but I wish to be mildly optimistic for now. Month and a half makes me think they are going to be more sensible and practice the same tactics used elsewhere. Expect lots of people trying to get recordings and expect a massively excessive response from the police to stop them doing so.

Nuclear option is Labour slap the terrorism label on the EDL and use all of the laws the Tories put in about protests to crush those not affiliated with them.

More likely one is the police use the people they have in those groups to kick off stuff to give their actions a veneer of respectability. We know they have a history of that, indeed there's a case currently going through about some of those who did that with left-wing affiliated groups.

I wouldn't be so hasty to come to that conclusion. The Arab Spring Protests that eventually led to the downfall of Moammar Ghadaffi and Hosni Mubarak started with minor relatively peaceful Protests. All it takes is the right mix of disgruntled public sentiment, ineffective government, and a spark to light the powder keg to set things off.

Well, my phrase might have been spelled out wrong, but I wouldn't call the Bill of Rights "afterthoughts" especially considering that the first 10 were all ratified at the same time, less than 2 years after the constitution itself was ratified , and the fact that people like James Madison, who were fundamental architects of the Constitution itself were main contributors to the Bill of Rights. And that they were specifically called out as fundamental rights guaranteed by the US constitution. I see it more as the founding fathers who wrote the constitution just simply "added to it" for lack of a better term, rather than amending the constitution in dramatic fashion.

One benefit of a Labour government is the populace knows they're actively hated by them so there's no need for voters to bow down in hope that Labour may do something about immigration. The Tories at least pretended they might do something. The election has probably saved them from dealing with the tipping point.
