Valve introduces Steam Deck

I'm also completely adamant now that these handhelds have to have track pads.
reminds me how people were talking shit about the trackpads when volvo first showed the deck :story:

Oh, well it’s not really an original opinion but I think that the Ally and all the other handhelds are over spec’d and are trying to push too many pixels for the size of screen they have. All this comes to the detriment of battery life and compromises them as handhelds.
but higher number better..?

people made memes of the steam controller too. should have ordered it when it was on sale years ago.

I got one when valve were selling them cheap and used it for racing games/beam ng. The touch pads were great for mouse emulation and navigating menus in beam plus those two paddles on the back are perfect for shift up/shift down.

but higher number better..?

I know you’re taking the piss but it’s the real killer to the handhelds and gaming laptops too that they end up so power hungry that the batteries end up lasting an hour and you end up tethered to a wall to keep the damn thing going. Valve (and Nintendo for that matter) hit the right balance with Specs vs Gaming Experience vs Battery Life on their handhelds yet Asus, Lenovo and MSI seem to have missed the point of a handheld altogether.

What are everone's thoughts on the ROG Ally X? I am still thinking alot about the Gamers Nexus scandal vids with it plus @Slav Power post with it.
I'd read reviews very carefully and wait a few months after launch to see if it has a design flaw like the SD card melting. If Asus successfully fixes all the flaws of the original Ally then it's worth considering. I'd hope it would have a m.2 SSD slot.

I'm more interested in the Lenovo Legion Go 2, myself.

yes and no, bigger numbers is easy marketing and works for retards. remember this is the "iphone 15 is obviously better than iphone 14!" crowd. that the details are worse is either secondary or completely irrelevant for some reason, it's "better" than the steam deck. find the right sweet spot and you can sell of lot of crap to a lot of idiots.
some products miss the point so hard you really have to wonder...

Just sharing this in case anybody else runs into this issue, since I couldn't find any posts about it online and it was a huge headache to actually determine the problem.

I turned on my Deck the other day after about a month of not using it, and it would hang on the login screen forever. After some troubleshooting, I finally noticed that the system clock had somehow desynced. This was causing an SSL certification error and I couldn't connect to the steam servers or any other website. I was able to get into desktop mode, but because you can't use the on-screen keyboard without being logged into steam (something Valve really needs to fix) there was no way to type in my password and change the system time. Luckily though, you can boot into the bios and just change it directly from there, no password needed.

Decided to order one of these. Any games in particular that you all have enjoyed playing on the can?

AC6 actually feels decent to play on the deck if you cap it to 40 fps, as do most games, also been enjoying star ocean 2 on it, feels like the perfect jrpg for a handheld

My Deck's purpose is around the few games I cannot have on the Switch (played Judgement, Lies of P, Armored Core 6, Volcano Princess, Earth Defense Force 5 & 6) and PS2 emulation (like Ico and Zettai Zetsumei Toshi/Disaster Report, the PS2 being the sole retro console system not available on mobile unlike PS1 and PSP).

While I clocked over 50 hours on Earth Defense Force 6 through the Steam Deck, I experienced no less than a dozen crashes in spite of fix attempts (Proton Experimental, disabling framerate limiter, no anisotropic filtering). At least none of the experienced crashes happened during a middle of a difficult mission, it's been either the first 30 seconds after starting a level or when browsing the equipment loadout menu.

Im considering buying it for a 8 hour flight Im going to take, tho is it better to buy it now or maybe wait for S.D 2?

I picked up a Lenovo Legion Go a month or two ago, and it's actually pretty nice. I had to do a lot of things to debloat and customize the OS/software to make it work how I wanted, but I actually like it a lot more than my old Steam Deck.

If you want something that runs well, is well supported and doesn't break the bank (too hard), you'll be pleased with the OLED model. Since I already own an OG LCD one, I don't see the point of getting one (beside the better screen and efficiency).

Anyone buy one of these to find out it’s the only device that you are PWM sensitive? I’ve never had a device nor screen hurt my eyes and head like the Steamdeck. And the symptoms started after the return period expired.

I’ve tried to turn up the brightness to 100% and lower the refresh rate. Nope, nothing works that i’ve tried so far.
