Settling his lawsuit might have been due to outside factors. He might have been forced by the judge to settle "They made you a good offer, mr Meyer, this has gone on long enough". There are more people involved in lawsuits than the two parties and they do not always have patience. The rest are on him alone though. And as a fence sitter myself, I can tell you that the "both sides are bad" does not apply here. Here one side can be cringe and scummy sometimes but the other side is evil.
