Dude, when this happened it legit jump-scared me. I had a pretty good chuckle at being a ghost brain.
Ngl I didn't even realise you got obliterated by it at first and had to re-read the log, shit was hysterical. Actually lost it when I got tossed out the station then my body just kept going :story:

I can see why this game had the following it did, and it’s a shame the only way to experience it in a reasonable way is Kiwistation.
Yeah when you get the right players together on the right station it really is something special tbh
 
I hopped on by myself and tried to get the station's power running by following the tutorial in the wiki (I have never played Engineering before). I got the generator fired up, set the SMES to maximum charge but none of the SMES units charged at all. Is the wiring broken or did I screw something up with their configuration? Also, how do I got about wiring the solars? I know they typically start in various stages of broken/needing to be turned on, but I am not sure about this codebase. Thanks for spoonfeeding.

Also, have we had a HOP consistently? Because if not I might take over it just so people have more accesses.

In addition to setting the charge to max you also have to enable charging, if you do that before there is any input power they will re-disable themselves (not my code thats just how they are)

I would suggest captaining so you have more to do its a bit rare for the hop to see much action due to the fairly low pop (although tbf they have the access/weapons to act like a mini captain if they want to)

Make sure you read the post ignition section closely, it shows exactly how the SMES need to be set, and remember it will take time before you can switch all four SMES to output. As the TMGs generate more power as the delta grows between both loop temperatures, each SMES from bottom to top will switch from not charging, to partially charging, to charging. Once an SMES is showing it's partially charging you can switch it to output

Also, how do I got about wiring the solars?

Okay, not sure what I did wrong the first time, but I restarted the round and was able to get the generator running along with four of the five solar arrays, all while being pelted by spam messages from Nigerian princes and Russian mail order brides. I then tried my hand at botany, which I have mostly done on /tg/ servers before. I think I prefer the old style botany with the gene splicer to /tg/'s weird cross-pollination system that makes it almost impossible to just grow stable, normal plants for the kitchen and medbay.

I hacked the seed vendor and grew a bunch of hallucinogenic mushrooms, but I did not see cannabis seeds. Any chance of getting weed? SS13 isn't the same without an underground weed ring run out of Botany.

I will be on later tonight if anybody wants to join and do a round or two of cozy lowpop play.

edit: @geckogoy we need you to reboot the server man, the Time To Start counter is stuck on 0 and we can't start any vote.

edit 2: resolved. The solution was to wait 7.5 minutes for the vote to become available, though I kinda wish there was any indication of how much more one has to wait to start a vote.

Thats weird, i didnt know there was code that would prevent you from doing restart votes
 
Good round tonight, didn't get any screencaps, but highlights were the generator shutting down prematurely and getting myself locked out of the station airlock while wiring solars, then the CMO had to break me back in to Maintenance. Shuttle was called for a crew transfer, then the Clown's robotic leg got infected and he asked for Canadian healthcare. He opened the blast door and killed everyone but me.

The wiki has a note that small amounts of N2 can be used in the hot loop and plasma in the cold loop, do either of these actually increase power generation? I tried to keep the pressure below 10 kPa, and I added N2O to the hot loop thinking it was an oxidizer so it would burn hotter, but I think it might have slowed the burn down. I was struggling to keep the power above 200 MW, so we kept losing power, and I had to enact rolling blackouts they rolled over everywhere but Atmospherics and Engineering and mostly didn't stop until I escaped. Probably didn't help that I was only able to get two solars going before things started to fall apart. Running the generator sure got a lot easier once I figured out that you can refill canisters in Atmos :story:

I rewrote the generator to have thermodynamics, I shall explain

The hot and cold loops exist purely to pump heat to the generator and back out, the cold loop gets cold in space, and the hot loop gets hot in the engine, the engine is the only place where combustion actually takes place, not in the loops.

The thermoelectric generator makes power based on the temperature difference between the hot side and the cold side. If the cold side heats up too easily, the power generation falls down due to the temperature difference decreasing. Because plasma has really high heat capacity, it can absorb more energy before heating up, meaning the temperature difference can stay higher and you can prop up power generation by adding more gas to the loops.

For some reason the cold loop seems to be a lot more productive to add gas to than the hot side which doesn't really make sense to me, I didn't change anything about the heat exchanger pipes so they may be a bit jank. The whole thing needs a bit more work TBH but its good enough for now.
 
My apologies, I said I added N2O to the hot loop, I meant I added it to the combustion chamber. I see how a bit of plasma in the heat exchanger pipes would help move heat. Apparently N2O is a fire extinguisher in some codebases? Thanks for the info, I have mostly payed Cargo and Botany so I am learning all this Engineering stuff as I go.
