I have some questions about running this. Looking through the thread it seems that if you're on linux you should run this in a VM (and a VPN), but I still have some questions I have about this:
Does this VM require gpu acceleration?
What version of windows should I use for the VM? Would win7 work?
I've seen people saying they will use a VPN. Will this work over TOR?

even if the server gets mega-troon-hacked you can only lose your VM and the hacker only gets what's on your VM

I'm not quite sure what this means. Are you saying it's possible for a compromised server to run malicious code on clients?

I know using a VPN is good practice but from what I understand all you're giving up is your IP if you don't. However I've seen a few posts that seem to imply no VPN results in immediate doxing somehow, for example:

SS13 troons have terrible opsec so I'm not really concerned about them trying to dox me even though they've tried (and failed) to dox me in the past. As long as you don't join a furry server without a VPN you should be fine.

Is there something about byond that just destroys opsec? Is there some furry list of known IPs to try and dox people even through residential IPs that rotate? What gives?

Not normally, but if troons somehow found a way to completely fuck BYOND into RCE'ing anyone they wanted they would only get as far as your VM. Good pracrice, and pretty much mandatory anyways if you are a GNU w/Linux chad.

Use windows 10 LTSC for your VM, it is the favorite OS of Null (traitor, valid). Win7 doesn't virtualize too well and suffers some support issues, I wouldn't be suprised if it turned out dreamseeker hadn't worked on win7 for years.

BYOND gives server owners access to your IP(obviously) and several identifying pieces of info based on your computer. They also work very closely with troons at this point so some backdoor getting snuck in by mistake is not entirely unfounded.

Ie, when you connect to a byond server prepare for them to have your IP, your ckey, any info attached to that ckey including payment methods for byond membership, and a fingerprint of your computer.
If you did not use a VM, your computer fingerprint can be used to connect you to multiple ckeys if you have alts, this is the basis of the stickyban system.
So if you were careless with sharing information on one account on a different server, but you connect to this one with a different account and using a VPN, this server still records your CID which in the event of a breach could be used to identify you personally using logs from the first server, most are publicly available.

This is why I so greatly encourage the logs of this server not to be shared in any way. As there are/will be trannies who are Very connected with the rest of the servers who will want to Ruin:
The server,
The server owner,
The players,
in descending priority. Geckogoy is taking a big risk running this server so really respect it.

Also for VPN I recommend Mullvad, set the exit to Seattle and you are good to go for the best possible ping. You can even pay with crypto.

Looking back it feels like SS13 was pretty much captured wholesale overnight by these people, like the entire community just had a sleeper gaybomb activate at once.

It was Discord. People say this but have a hard time explaining why. I think I have it:
Step 1) You start to play this game because it's funny.
Step 2) You find the game also works as a "Second Life", and you have a new, in-game social circle of "friends" and "coworkers." For a lot of people this will be the first time they have such a thing.
Step 3) Discord makes your "friends" and "coworkers" available without having to launch the game, leading to on most servers the most influential people being people that spend a lot of time on Discord but not playing the game. The game is no longer needed, because you used to play the game just to talk to your "friends" and "coworkers." You adopt the customs of your main social circle, which consists of people addicted to cartoon porn who think they are pornographic cartoon characters.

As this is basically your entire social circle, these people become your dating pool also in many cases. Maybe I am inexperienced with the wider internet, but SS13 has a uniquely disproportionate amount of people combining both not transitioning IRL but also going T4T. So you see a lot of "lesbian couples" and their photos get leaked and they don't look even like the ugly hons you see everywhere else. 90% of the time it's a normal looking boy. All of their social media profiles use a male name. They look like nerds, yes, but zero attempt to look like a girl. You join their discord VCs and they talk with a normal boy voice to their "girlfriend" who replies back to them in a normal boy voice. It's a very strange phenomenon.

I wouldn't be suprised if it turned out dreamseeker hadn't worked on win7 for years.

It started running like shit on Win7 about a year ago for me, and I've read somewhere that they're about to release an update that will make it entirely incompatible with 7.

I wish I could offer more than hearsay, but the devs have directly cited contributions from Mister Stoned One, the owner of TGstation. I cannot find this changelog page anymore.

Someone said the disk pinpointer didn't work for them, if they could provide some more detail on what that looked like that would be appreciated

When I spawned in as an ERT member later it lead me right to the dead captain who had the disk on him so I don't currently know whats wrong

• Screenshot feature does not work on 514 version of BYOND (but does on 515, so this is a very low priority issue);
• Blob does not attack mechas;
• Pinpointer actually points at X and Y coordinates of Nuclear Authentication Disk on non-station Z-levels instead of flashing a question mark icon (this needs verification);
• It would be cool to have audible emojies implemented like on more modern codebases (for example, *laugh and *scream);
• It would be cool to have some ebin kool kid gaymer emojies like *fart, *spin and *flip as well (hilarious but not very immersive).

Updates
I have commissioned the world famous romanian tomato farmer pawnishoovy (racist sound guy) to start working on gun sounds, so far three guns have been worked on:

• NT Mk58 (security pistol)
• W-T 550 Saber (security SMG)
• C-20r carbine (syndicate gun)

I have also:

• de-randomized the armory and defaulted the guns to packing lethal ammo as rubber bullets are for queers
• de-randomized medbay supplies finally

Unfortunately I probably cant do anything about that a lot of things changed between 514 and 515

They were randomized? I've played both Warden and MD quite a few times and didn't really notice this.

Anyway, those sounds are some quality audiophile material. Props to you for being willing to spend your hard-earned shekels on this small autistic game server (I know you're probably paying the bills for the servers but still).

Super recently, it was in this commit for preparation of the new sounds coming in. Only reason I know that is Gecko mentioned it after I was doing some testing and noticed the clown shoe squeaks were playing when you fired energy guns lol

The items on like half the departments shelves/tables etc are randomised, or at least were. In the case of the armory, shotgun spawns could be a bit 50/50 as to if you'd even get one tbh

Interesting. I agree that the areas with some critical equipment like Armory shouldn't have their items spawn randomly, but the rest of such spawns can be left in as this feature seems rather inconsequential without the vital areas affected. I didn't even notice this was happening in the first place.

• Cryo tubes have been reworked to be self-contained devices now that dont need a freezer thingy. they are tuned to require about 90 seconds to cool down if a human is inside right now (subject to fiddling)
