What's more likely, in my opinion, and seemingly the opinion of most people here, is that the court agreed to the grandparents monitoring the situation. The state seemed more or less okay with that if the grandparents were educated on how to spot drug use.
I sincerely hope that the grandparents have moved in, it'll be mere days before Narcissist Nick finds some irreconcilable flaw with them and begins seething that he has to do basic life shit like buying their groceries, taking out their trash, making their bed or any other intolerable aggression.

Again, I think what happened is they are conditionally giving the kids back. I do not think they want to keep the kids, and as long as Nick will agree to certain conditions, they're fine with it and they don't need or want a full adversarial process.

If we speculate, who else would have seen drug use? Nanny? Church reporters? With follicle drug tests excluded and 60 days of clean piss tests, there might have been limited evidence of actual usage.
Perhaps MNRecords has something to shed light on this, but in a family case, it is more unveiled than not that we will know more than Nick is exaggerating in some way.
As to why they grew distant, I had a theory that maybe Nick was unhappy that Coomy's bullshit borked Nick's chance to get Pippa on his show ("bullet dodged"), but I dunno. It's just a theory I had.
Nick appears to have been a menace in private.
