Ironically, this was the story of 2016's primary. Two "next guy in line" candidates had failed in a row, and it was time for the GOP to pick a new direction out of the many factions presented by the primary candidates.

Trump steamrolled them all with basic nationalist populism, and the party hasn't come up with a rival ideological faction since. After 8 years, it's just Trump and NeverTrump. I don't know that there is even a meaningful ideological split remaining, other than warmed over neo-cons sliding leftward down the Overton Window, and they don't have the support of the party base any more.

I do not personally know of a split in the base, but at the party level there's a full on war behind the scenes between the younger, Trump generation, and the old guys, at least around me. That seems to have died down with the assassination attempt, but I wouldn't doubt if it comes back for the midterms.

It's not hard to understand. Decades of massive immigration and politicization of education have resulted in a massive chunk of the electorate that doesn't give two shits about policy or even who the candidates are. No one who votes for them thinks about anything more deeply than that, because they don't have to. They already know what the alternative is.

The real test is what the boomers do post-Trump. The same people in my life that were very pro-Reagan, Bush Sr., Dole, Bush Jr., Romney, and McCain are all now very pro-Trump. Ideologically, these candidates don't align with Trump at all, with the minor exception of Reagan's first campaign.

@holyhandgrenade Bush Jr. was never supposed to win. Jeb was planned to be Bush Sr.'s successor, but Al Gore was a smarmy queer that nobody wanted to vote for. Bush Jr did so much damage to the GOP's reputation that a lot of right leaning millennials left the party, leaving Romney and McCain hanging in the wind on youth votes. By the time it was Jeb's turn, the Bush family was already dead to any voters under 40.
