You're saying this, but Facebook and Twitter had a history of a political bias. FB itself is mainly populated by boomers and cat moms that post low effort memes about their politics. Twitter's best move was adding a "fact check" whenever somebody makes a tweet without knowing what they're talking about. Even so, I cannot even see recent tweets without needing an account. Don't even get me started on TikTok.

I should not need a social media account JUST to get news.

It’s more than overrated, it’s straight up not real. The study that it was based off of was long ago proven faulty. IIRC it was based off extrapolating data from Hiroshima, but that doesn’t actually represent how nuclear warfare would actually change the climate because Nip cities were made of paper at the time.

People like Sagan just ran with it anyways because they have a very strange hatred for all things nuclear.
