Chuck is right and the comments saying that he’s wrong because Tokyo still has affordable housing despite an increasing population are themselves wrong. They do have an increasing population, but their housing (especially in the areas that urbanists like) is only affordable to foreigners who can take advantage of the weak Yen.https://youtube.com/watch?v=8Id8AZnVYHkrather interesting video by Chuck antecedently Sneed, basically accuses others of Cherry Picking when he himself is ignoring the central argument of these people that Tokyo has been growing pretty massively yet there's been no major increase in housing prices, very disingenuous, and all the comments are calling him out.
Tokyo's population is slightly increasing, but the Greater Tokyo Area now has a declining population and has been flat for years:
Compare those population growth rates to American metro areas and it should be clear that Tokyo is not facing the same challenges as the US:
There are 245 American metro areas that grew more from 2020-2023 (three years) than the Tokyo Metro Area grew from 2015-2020 (five years).
They told Chuck to look up Tokyo's population and compare it to other metro areas, but they didn't actually do that themselves.
An English article talking about how normal Japanese people feel about Tokyo's housing market:

Only in urbanist land is $865k for a 646 sq ft apartment considered affordable. The cheap housing isn’t in places like Shinjuku that Jason visited and gushed about. It’s in the outskirts where the commute to the central city takes over an hour.
