I know the topic of the day has been bad voice acting in DT lately, but can I talk about how jarring the VA changes from ARR to HW have been?

I hate Merlwyb's new VA. She's too quiet and passive sounding for one of the most aggressive and commanding characters in the early game. The first VA managed to be imposing/intimidating without radiating bitchy vibes and I really miss her performance. Also Alphinaud sounds a lot whinier in HW but I guess that fits his character arc at least. He was a lot more fun back when he was a cocky asshole who didn't kiss WoL's boots all the time.

The change to new VAs in HW wasn’t 100% better. I think most everyone prefers Merlwyb’s original. I’d say it’s still a vast improvement though.

Some characters are better, I'd agree. I actually think Raubahn and Illberd's HW voice actors sound pretty good.

Merlwyb was the only who's ARR VA I missed. I don't remember why they couldn't keep her, if it was for the same reason as the other VA's or not. But yeah her replacement VA just isn't the same.

Was it just a matter of cost that led to the cast switching up so drastically? I'm sure I'll get used to all the new VAs soon enough, most of them aren't too bad (excepting maybe Merlwyb) but I'm curious why they didn't stick with the originals.

They changed VA studios. Not sure why but it was probably for "business reasons".
A few of the HW characters you meet in post-ARR already have their HW VAs.
Yugiri's VA changes again in post-HW because she got murdered - This is the reason why she doesn't have any voiced roles for most of the expansion.

if they replaced Wuk with a faggy gay nurse it probably would've improved the expansion though

I guess it really helps that for as shit as she is, at least she only shows up for the last few levels and doesn't have that many lines since you have to speak with wuk lamat.

got Paladin to 80 and I'm having more fun with it than I was with GNB and DRK, having the magic rotation at least makes the class more engaging but not hectic

If you do the Bahamut stuff (which is entirely optional) Alphinaud's VA straight up sounds like an anime villain at some points.

The characterization changed too though, so that contributes. ARR seemed to have a more adversarial relationship between the Scions and they just dropped that entirely.

I really hate when games do this.

Having everyone be super happy trusting buddies all the time is incredibly dull. The Scions felt like they had a lot more characterization when they'd occasionally throw barbs at each other or treat people skeptically. I get it- By Heavensward we've gone through some shit together. But that doesn't mean everyone in the crew needs to be all subservient and passive all the time.

Yeah it was DT only. A cute girl design helps a lot it seems is all I am saying. Every time I have to listen to "If I smile that's because you all smile for me" I want to punch her though, so it has no effect on me.

Her personality sucks. She's disrespectful in the Japanese voice acting in ways that frankly aren't close to being endearing. She acts like a fucking moron and dominates all the expansion dialogue to the detriment of all previously established characters that should have been given at least a little chance to shine.

XIV discussion subreddit has an interesting thread of translated responses from the JP side and yeah. One of the most interesting is someone pointing out that she's just disrespectful when during the quiz segment in the final area she goes "I'm getting tired of this". Take into mind that this is in front of Krile and during her finally finding out about her home before she potentially loses that chance permanently. Which definitely comes across as a bit shitty. It'd be like if your friend met their biological parents for the first time in their life and you just yawn and go "can we go to McDonalds already?".

The gap closers are one of the worst changes in the expansion. This gay little slide Dragoons got is shit. I expect them to gradually remove all their jumps now.

DRK gapcloser is a massive visual downgrade. Balance-wise, I do like the change since removing the damage makes gapclosers purely a utility tool that you don't need to weave into burst windows for maximum DPS, but a bunch did get a visual downgrade.

Hoping the ex has Wuk Lamat pop in only to be flicked away like the ref in M3.

Given how they've tried to attach a little bit of lore to the EX/Savage versions of fights, I kinda hope they do this for EX3 too.

Like I'm pretty sure the flavour text for Endsinger basically implies that the EX version of the fight would be what happens if Endsinger is so strong that the whole prayer sequence fails to get through and you need to continue the fight alone. And that M4S is basically what would have happened if Eutrope decided not to withdraw from the fight, but to continue on.

Sure, it'd probably be wanking of Wank Lamat again by saying something like "What would have happened if a strong ally had been unable to pierce through the veil" or something, suggesting that Wuk Lamat is somehow a fucking crazy strength ally, But that's something I would be willing to deal with if I don't have to deal with "SPEEEEEEN, LEEESTEN TO MEEEE" during my prog runs.
