Actions movies that actually have a good plot/cast/plausible story.

Nothing wrong with good traditional action film but, there are some that are just good movies even without the guns/explosions and car chases. As in the dialogue/characters/acting/plot are great, details like the firearms actually sound like a gun being fired in an urban environment, you get the idea.

Here are some of my recommendations:

1995 Heat, an actually good "heist" action film Robert De Niro, Al pacino, Val Kilmer, Danny Trejo, Tom Sizemore all in the prime of their careers. Danny Trejo stopped being an alcoholic, Tom Sizemore was also sober from his meth problem, Robert De Niro hadn't become a liberal faggot yet but, the movie itself is so so well done for an action film. The movie was so well received it was alleged to have inspired the infamous "North Hollywood shootout", google that rabbit hole if you want to. To me the dialogue between De Niro an Pachino is almost worthy of a short film al by itself.

Here's a good modernized trailer, be warned it's slightly on the spoiler side as all modern trailers are.

My second recommendation is Collateral 2004, Jamie Foxx is a cab Driver and kind of a pussy/nobody who picks up the wrong fare played by Tom Cruize. The movie has some good action scenes, more importantly the story and acting are great imho. Javier Bardem before he was a bigshot has some dialogue. Tom Cruize typically plays the protagonist, the likeable smart mouthed funny hero. In this film that is not him

Trailer

If you never plan on seeing this movie, as in you're dying of cancer tomorrow or something this will ruin my favorite scene in the film for you. I can't get enough of this scene, I'm somewhat of a firearms enthusiast so take that into consideration;

3rd recommendation,

No Country for Old Men, 2007. Based on a Cormack Mcarthy novel IIRC, Josh Brolin plays an everyday redneck blue collar type literally living in a trailer in the mid 1980s, other than being a little bit on the clever side and knowing his way around firearms that's his entire character till he reaized what he's gotten himself into. He's out hunting antelope in a rural area and comes up on both an one hell of asset and liability. Javier Bardem as his adversary is outstanding and just for lack of a better term "scary as fuck". IMHO this launched Javier Bardem's career from character actor to lead roles.

Locks do not work the way they are defeated/exploited in this film, this comes up a lot. Take a it from someone who has breached a thousand doors for civilians and law enforcement this simply just does not work this way. I mean I found it interesting and cool but my own autism and technical knowledge struggled with the suspension of disbelief

4th Recommendation:
Drive 2011, Slow paced "car chase" type of action film, first 10 minutes are the best scene in the movie imho, the main Character played by Ryan Gosling is purposely given as little background as possible and he's somewhere between traditionally stoic and literally autistic a very different take on the traditional "anti-hero". As implied by the title chase scenes are the highlight as far as action goes, the plot and story are enough to carry the film and without ruining it for you the script does not go as you'd expect. There are some odd choices in the music but nothing terrible. Albert Brooks has always been typecast as this goofy lovable Jewish guy and he although I'm certain his character is Jewish it's not Albert Brooks you've seen before. Bryan Cranston is in it and he's great as always.

Aliens 1986, I dont' think I could spoil this movie if I tried. just watch it if you have not yet, it's debatable more sci-fi than action but the injection of action into the "Alien story" was loved by everyone. Some claim it was a parable for the Vietnam conflict, I don't have an opinion on that.

"Game over, man., Game over"

details like the firearms actually sound like a gun being fired in an urban environment
The gunfire in Heat sounds like guns being fired in an urban environment cos it actually is the sound of guns being fired in a urban environment. They couldn't get the foley gunfire to sound good enough so they ended up using the sound recorded on stage of the blank firing guns. That's also why you don't hear any bullets.

Den of Thieves is a modern retread of Heat but with an extra layer in the plot that makes for a good twist. It does have a silly gadget in it that's reminiscent of The Italian Job and you'll also have to suffer 50 Cent but he gets little screentime before dying as another character inflicts cringe dialogue on him.

The French version of Taxi is an action comedy and there's some very good dialogue in it. The silliness can get OTT but it's a French comedy, after all.
Obviously, subs>dubs

This is a scene from Heat (remember the actual North Hollywood Shooters only made it a couple blocks and 90% of the shooting was in the bank parking lot)

I understand your argument but, most action films or even films in general jump through so many "suspension of disbelief hoops" it hard to deal with sometimes. You want some metrics? IIRC the North Hollywood shootout somewhere around 300-400 rounds of 7.62x39/9mm/5.56 were fired that day, it lasted longer than the scene in Heat. Life imitating art? IDK. IMHO those guys weren't there to rob Bank of America they were there to start a gunfight with LAPD and see who would win. They were high as fuck on phenobarbital if memory serves.

Sicario was excellent in this regard, really makes you feel the tense atmosphere throughout the film. The sequal on the other hand fell into the Hollywood trap and was more of a generic action film.

Another good one is the first Rambo movie (First Blood), since the first movie was based on a book the story was actually compelling.

I'm gonna go ahead and put Die Hard in this category. yeah there's some shit like swinging on the fire hose, but what I liked about it is John McClane isn't some action hero (until the sequels) just an off duty cop caught in a horrible situation and trying his best to survive and get help. the desperation of McClane throughout the movie really sells how much danger he is in at all times, but he doesnt have any other options.
Edit: for shits and giggles

Hobo with a shotgun yeah the violence is a bit over the top but basically a man is tired of the corruption of a city so he just goes around shooting all of the criminals

dirty Harry basically a cop who doesn't care about the rights of criminals and shoots first and ask questions later it's very movie that if you get what was happening at the time it becomes very realistic

I think Rambo First Blood is a good movie about how a veteran vietnam war is basically forgotten in his own land.
seconded these two. As for my personal recommendation:

only the first movie, haven't seen the sequels. Crackerjack pair of leads against a drug trafficking ring.

was originally gonna recommend collateral but you've already covered that and then i was gonna recommend hardcore henry but upon skipping through that i now remember how over the top action movie it is so keeping in line with the heist movie recommendations ill recommend baby driver instead.
the car scenes are way over the top especially compared to something like drive and the movie really falls apart at the end, however i find the story to be pretty interesting and it has a great cast, its a shame it loses its footing towards the end and becomes a pretty generic action movie tho its good for what it is and i enjoy the mash of characters.

Whether they're high or not, they're still cognitive enough to put everybody in the bank into the bank vault before leaving. The bank vault being probably the best protected spot to be in when the shooting started.

Vincent Hanna will never not be the most entertaining action movie protagonist, love the sequel novel scene where he throws a child abuser off a roof. Coked-out little Al Pacino slaying pedophiles would’ve been enough to keep his career going into the 2000s.

You hear they’re the doing the sequel with zoomer actors replacing these legends?

A fair number of these aren't really action movies, in that the action isn't the primary focus of the movie or a large portion of the runtime. They do have excellent, memorable action scenes, though.

Black Hawk Down is pretty plot-light but given it's based on real events it's hard to say that it's not realistic.

I really like a lot of John Woo's movies. A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2, and Hard Boiled are easily two of the greatest action movies of all time while being well written with interesting characters. There is a stereotype that Woo's movies have insane gunfu stunts, but in these movies most of the action is quite realistic and brutal.

Some other action movies I remember being well written without compromising plot for the action are They Live, Oldboy, Predator, Aliens, Die Hard 1 and 3, Assault on Precinct 13, and Robocop. There's other action movies with great plots and/or characters too, but their insane action scenes tend to ruin the pacing and tone of the story, like Battle Royale. Horror action movies seem to be the best at balancing both of these aspects.
