IMO the common thread of a lot of these past social contagions (along with ROGD) is that they serve as easy ways to explain away mental issues and not fitting in. It's difficult to live when you're miserable and have no idea why, but if you assign a clear culprit to it (I'm weird and miserable because I got raped as a newborn/because I was secretly brainwashed by a satanic cabal/because I am transgender) it becomes way easier to think about and deal with. Suddenly you have a well-defined problem, with a well-defined solution that typically involves giving lots of money to the psychiatric or medical sector.
Eventually, society runs with these ideas because they are easy to sensationalize, and teenagers who are unsure of why they feel and act the way they do stumble upon these explanations, and the scary part about them is that they are impossible to disprove. It's impossible to disprove that someone is trans because there are no standards for what makes you a tranny apart from calling yourself one. Similarly, it's impossible to disprove that you have some repressed trauma you can't remember. The rhetoric is the same in both cases because it's gaslighting.
