i always figured narcissists were slick. i had no idea they could be such bumbling disasters.

I had a front row seat to the life of a narcissist and continue to hear new stories about them as the years go on, well after their death. While I grant there must be slick narcs out there, the bell curve dictates most are not. That doesn't mean their manipulations won't work, those which get anywhere have something going for them, like good looks or money, which allows them to get away with a lot...until they suddenly can't anymore. When that fails, they attempt to manipulate those who they have a hold over, familial ties, for example. When THAT stops working, then the true rage begins. Distance is the only thing to protect you from that rage.

This particular narc got away with a lot when they were young and pretty, managed to go through more than 3 husbands in a period of less than 20 years (mind you, this was pre 1980s, before divorce became as common as wiping your ass), all of whom were long gone by the time they died alone in a hospital as a result of a life of self abuse. That side of the extended family involves a lot of parties that raised their children who are not directly family, but acted more like a mother than they ever did. They had no home to their name, by the end of their life they rented a single-wide in a shitty trailer park on socsec, and the entirety of their assets that were worth anything were stolen by their siblings (all but one of which were incredible failures and assholes in their own right) immediately after their death, there weren't many such assets which is part of how that happened. Their own mother outlived them, by quite a few years.

They were never slick outside of their physical beauty (when they were young), nor were their manipulations complex, but those manipulations were persistent, audacious, and typically directed at their children (of which there were more than 2 but less than eight), their much more successful children (something about having a trainwreck of a mom must have motivated them all), at least by the time I took a seat and had any inkling of what was going on.

Most egregiously, they would use outside parties to attempt to gain leverage over these children: for example claiming to these parties that abusive actions were happening within the household of said children in an attempt to jerk around other members of the household through outside pressure. How they thought this would work, I don't understand to this day, but the brain of a narc may as well be another universe. Those attempts caused immense grief within the households in question, but never seemed to result in whatever outcome they were hoping to achieve.

Another favorite manipulation was intentionally putting themselves in a patently awful situation and then begging their children to be bailed out...usually from half a country or more away. Remember how I said the attempts were "audacious"?

Anyone that told them "no" outright became PNG and those grudges persisted until they died. Half of their own children were completely PNG.

All but one of their children would not visit them by the time of their death.

That is the true end of the average narc once all their advantages disappear.
