Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

When online stores send you an email saying you left something in your cart. I know you're sitting on my data for signing up for your store but fuck right off. Be at least a little less obvious.
To me the worst part is they won't give you shipping costs until you put in your email. So if you just wanted to see the total and back out because it was too high you get the "complete your transaction" emails.

Im driving in my car when something falls on my phone and pops up my google ai assistant or whatever its called on my android auto and pauses my audio. I tell it to "fuck off" and the fucking thing starts to lecture me! It says something like "I know im just an AI personal assistant but that language is not welcome. Please refrain from using harsh language in the future." It then starts going into how to make a complaint if it isnt working right, and stops immediately when I let out an exasperated "oh my god."

I dont abuse the thing or even ever use it, dont lecture me from my fucking car speakers about how I talk to an annoying phone "feature" I never asked for.

Growing up I watched Knight Rider(the original, 1980s version) and I thought it would be cool to be able to talk to my car.

Now, the first thing I did with my car is disable all the built-in voice crap. I think I've successfully gotten it to the point where if I accidentally hit the "I want to talk to my car" button, then nothing happens, as it should be.

Maybe this has been said already, but one thing I do hate that's becoming standard is the start/stop feature that more and more new vehicles are coming equipped with.

First of all, this feature, on paper, is supposed to be good at saving fuel whenever the vehicle is not in motion. In practice, however, both from what I've experienced and what I've heard, this feature ends up using MORE gasoline in both the short and long term.

Secondly, and get this, additional wear and tear is heaped onto the cars battery. Some makes, like Chrysler and Jeep, for example, try to remedy this by adding a second battery called an auxiliary battery. My issue with that setup? If the aux battery goes out, there goes your ignition system. Worse yet, on some vehicles, both the main and aux batteries are, more often than not, placed UNDER the passenger seats on some of these vehicles. Guess how fun it is to change just ONE of those things.

Thankfully, one can turn off the stupid start/stop feature on these vehicles, with the downside being that every time you turn on your car, you have to disable the feature.

Like someone else said, back in the '80s talking to a robot would be seen as cool.

But of course, Current Year Clown World somehow managed to make that insufferable.

It's so awful, have had an issue recently where it would fail.to restart and you end up blocking traffic. Have to put transmission in park and cycle the key again, meanwhile people lose their shit at you.
(VW, underlying issue was a worn turbo actuator, naturally the code it throws doesn't give any info other than there's something wrong with some part of the engine)
In order to fix that I ended up getting the $$$ VAGCOM, which is basically the only system available for deep diving into the ecu and you have to pay for the rights per VIN to use the software.
At least this let me permanently turn off the stop start system. Now out of spite I'm going to make this thing run forever till the chassis wears out.

Naturally this is just after paying about what the vehicle is worth on the used market to replace the mechatronic unit which controls the transmission. Which shit itself after about 7 years. VW of course says, no that's normal and too bad for you sucker (they did have a recall on them where the wires in the oil failed)

It was a good car till it got to be about 5-6 years old, which incidentally is when the warranty ends.

All the good germans were killed in the war

Stop start only makes sense when you have a hybrid engine imo. If I'm in the city waiting for a gap in traffic, I need to punch it and drive immediately, not after the car turns back on, decides if it's going to let me accelerate at the speed I have requested instead of throw some lights saying computer says no

I hate seo. You can not find cool websites anymore made by hobbyists because they are buried under an ocean of scam crap.
oh god I do hate that. you need to either know the exact name of what you're looking for or use a site like yandex to maybe get better results.
I had something similar happen recently. I was looking for a potential birthday gift for someone and I didn't know the exact/proper name for what I wanted to find. Most of my search results were for everything but what I wanted. I finally found what I wanted through chance and dumb luck (and now I now what term to use when searching for this item).

I think it's been said before that search in general has taken a huge shit with promoted ads and other questionable sites clogging up the most innocuous of searches.

Thread tax: Companies who software updates eliminate the free version of the software and perpetual licenses for the paid versions in favor of annual extortion licensing fees. Thank Godbear I still have the setup file for the older free version I downloaded years ago that still suits my needs.

Some car brands, namely GM models (I think), don't even have an option to disable Auto Start/Stop. And this is also the brand that moved the moved the headlight controls in the Chevy Colorado to the touchscreen:

Another annoying tech trend that I ran into, is what the fuck is the .avif format? When I was looking for a photo of the said Chevy Colorado light controls, I found a picture that had that file format:

Did companies get inspiration from the .webp format, and are making more annoying file types for pictures and videos?

According to a quick search, apparently it's an open source image format based on the AV1 video codec, first used by Netflix. Bit smaller than JPG, not as small as WEBP.
My verdict is that it's gay for normal people, it's basically JPG with transparency and HDR

The consequences of companies trying to be "innovative" in this day and age.

I have a 2017 Nissan Altima, and at most, it has remote start, push-to-start and the infotainment setup that was dated 2014 even though it was for a 2018 model.

Something I forgot to mention; with newer vehicles having 100+ ELECTRONIC components under the hood, with that number only going higher, the type of battery they're all coming with is AGM. By itself, AGM batteries aren't a huge gripe for me. What is though is the PRICE. I work at an auto parts retail shop, and Lord have mercy if the prices aren't getting cheaper. When the battery on a 2023 Chevy goes out in a year because GM can't make a car that isn't vamping the juice out of that battery, guess which type you're effectively stuck with.

I just want to be able to by a standard cab basic compact pickup truck in the United States again. Every pickup truck now is XBOX HUEG and rife with over complicated computer controls and electronics. They also all have short beds because a crew cab is basically the only option available now. Not to mention that they are all like 34k and up. I had a GMC Sonoma back in the 2000s. Small, V6, AC, basic radio, physical controls, manual roll down windows. I miss that little nigga like you wouldn't believe.

I hate how the 22-24 inch monitor form factor has been shafted and basically stuck in 1080p since forever. I don't have a big desk nor do I have the space in my office for a bigger one. With my 3 monitor setup and 2 speakers which take up space between the monitors, I max out at a 27 inch monitor.

Currently my main is a 23 inch 1080p Dell from 2010. If I replace that with a 27, things are going to get cramped quickly, but I basically have to if I want to take advantage of my 4070 Super.

Basically, the 22-24 inch form factor needs to get some 1440p and 4k support. There very much are use cases for it. I hate this idea that bigger=better. No. With monitors, it's what fits on your desk, always has been, and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.

I solved this by going insane and going even smaller with "portable" monitors. The good ones have high end notebook and tablet panels and a pixel density between 220 and 300 at 2-4k is very usual. Looks amazing and is good for my eyes as every font is super sharp. Only problem is some stuff struggling with the high pixel density.

I mean that is a solution. I just don't get why they can't make a basic 24 inch 1440p monitor. We have the tech. I shouldn't need a portable monitor to be forced into a permanent role. But that is something I can look into I guess
