At least one of his parents is a narc too, most likely his mother from my experience, and they tend to go to extensive lengths to cover for their failure children because disowning them means enduring a narc injury themselves. If they acknowledge Nick is a failure it means (in their minds) admitting that they failed as a parent to him. Good example to consider is Casey Anthony, her mother was probably the narc tree that the apple didn't fall far from, she spun absurd tales in court to cover for her daughter googling chloroform and neck breaking. Her obsession with controlling the family's image was said to be extreme, to the point that she denied Casey was pregnant virtually right up until she gave birth and told people outside the family that she simply had gained weight. I picture Nick's mother potentially being like this to some extent.

I personally believe being a narc is mostly genetic but I think some of the tactics are learned too, so whether Nick inherited or is emulating a behavior or both, one of his parents is likely responsible for at least some of what he is now.
