My working theory is that it's primarily a mix of accessibility and generational interest. I'm not sure about IMVU but the kinds of people who occupy SL are for-life types that're extremely hostile to newcomers anyways.

@Ruben Sim, I feel like you'd know this better than anyone here. I have no doubts that stuff like this has been around since the dawn of this site, but from what I've personally seen, it feels like it's only gotten really bad in the last 4-5 years. I've only really bothered with the games on Roblox, I've done barely any digging into groups at all, and I haven't bothered with clothing since the removal of tix.
I guess I'm trying to say that I'm simultaneously surprised and not surprised. I always chalked it up to retarded children being cringe, and I think at one point it was just that. I just get the sense that it's morphed into its vile form in the last half-decade the more I read up on this, but I could totally be wrong on that.

Has the growth of this community been exponential? What does the timeline of this community look like?
