Public submissions for new design of Illinois state flag will soon be accepted

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said public submissions for a new design will be accepted starting Tuesday.

Ten of those designs will be selected.

After a public feedback period, the general assembly will decide whether to adopt a new flag or keep the current one.

Visit www.ilsos.gov or submit designs via mail addressed to Illinois Flag Commission, Howlett Building, Room 476, 501 S. Second St., Springfield, IL 62756.

Minnesota unveiled its new flag in December 2023, using a similar method to the one adopted by Illinois, a news release from Giannoulias' office Wednesday said. Both Michigan and Maine are also considering an official change in their state flags, the release said.

I have similar gripes about overly complicated national anthems. National anthems should be something a crowd of people can sing drunk at a sports game to taunt the faggots on the other side. You basically need to be an opera singer to properly sing the US national anthem.
This is why despite Canada being a gay country the National anthem "Oh Canada" slaps. Although the old one "The Maple Leaf Forever" was great as well.

I fucking hate the incessant changing of flags, especially for “marketability” or for “modernity.” A flag design not only represents something, but also carries the history of its establishment in its design and acts as a symbolic time capsule. Flags should only be changed when a sovereign nation or state has been conquered by another.
I blame Canada. The Red Ensign was sweet.

Weird because the Illinois state flag is one of the few that's actually interesting. If the redesigns of the Utah and Minnesota flags are anything to go by then I guarantee that whatever replaces it will look like the blandest, dullest thing you've ever seen in your life.

I'm honestly not sure why states even need flags? The national flag of the US is absolutely iconic, one of the best flags in the world and I'm not even American. To my knowledge the only state flags most state residents will identify with are the California and Texas flags, which are coincidentally the only two state flags that don't make you want to fall asleep looking at them.

So I ask the question, do the other 48 need one? Just have state seals for official documents and such and use the national flag when you need something to put up on a flagpole.

A bit of inside baseball, but I have to share because it made me lol.

of course the joke comes from a shitty locally-produced TV commercial

It's necessary to disclose that some guy is selling merch with this design so that he doesn't go round reeeeing that Kiwifarms stole muh art. I have no idea whether he actually submitted it to the State flag contest but I sure hope he did. Actually, it would be great if they would publish the entire body of submissions online for us to laugh at (like Minnesota did) but Springfield isn't exactly known as a paragon of transparency or technological competence.

Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona are all fine. The problem is more than half of them are state seals, and the rest are simple (Alabama) or overly complex (Maryland). Ohio has a special mention for being weird, normal rectangles are fine, windsocks aren't.

Not a big fan of the flag of Colorado. It looks like the flag of Argentina with the logo of a supermarket slapped on top of it. The flag of Arizona is cool but it reminds me too much of the flag of Vietnam. Funnily enough I'd say almost the exact same about the flag of New Mexico, only with South Vietnam instead.

Boring. Needs to be the flag of Mozambique, but with a shotgun and a corncob

Edit: But seriously why not keep it simple? Just add the stripe and stars from the centennial flag. It'll be it unique and identifiable from a distance, but also keeps state symbolism from the current flag. Hopefully that would make both Illinoisans attached to the current flag and flag autists happy.

If anyone else has any suggestions I've got a free day and 1337 hours in Inkscape

If they're gonna change it at least try to take inspiration from the Sesquicentennial flag. It would look good if you take out the shape of the state inside the i.
But I know for sure they'll just pick a terrible one that features some African flag or some other gay shit.

I have an answer to this!
You have to realize that the US is a union of states, and while the federal government has become progressively more powerful since the Civil War (especially WWI & II), the States are still, legally and for the most part socially, mostly-sovereign entities. That's why they're states, not territories or regions or what have you (though even our territories have some actually pretty decent flags but that's because they're ran as basically pseudo-states). A state deserves a banner appropriate to it's history and ideals. This would be like arguing that European states should surrender their flags once they join the EU. Fuck that noise, these people are still incredibly different and should take pride in what their ancestors achieved across several hundred years of blood, sweat, and tears.

The issue is so many states have fucking bland as fuck flags. Seal and blue background. Seal and blue background. Seal with fucking slightly different blue background. The only one who's allowed to keep their seal and blue background is Virginia and that's because it's OG as hell with a fucking murder on it, relatively simplified, and "Sic Semper Tyrannis" being one of the best mottos ever devised. Alaska is also an example of how to make a cool state flag on a blue background without the retarded seal.

Anyhow thanks to coming to my austic screeching tedtalk. Fuck the feds, and God bless the 10th Amendment!
