Generally, any attempt by a defendant to enter evidence of good character into the record "opens the door" to any evidence that would rebut that claim.Would Nick's claim of good character allow the prosecution to introduce the Dear John stream as evidence he's a piece of shit?
So if you argue you're innocent because it would be totally out of character for you to have shoplifted, they can introduce evidence you have been convicted of it repeatedly (this would usually be prohibited), and if you are arguing at sentencing that you deserve leniency because of your prior good character, it's relevant to point out that no, you are actually a complete piece of shit who deserves the book thrown at you.
I think the Dear John thing is inside pool enough that most people wouldn't get it without some lengthy explanation of the context, but it (and anything similar including the deranged cokestream) would be generally admissable subject to the "is it more probative than prejudicial" balancing test.
What a pathetically bad pathological liar. So alcohol puts cocaine in your nostrils and on your nose now?He has insisted it was just alcohol.
