UrbanSpook is a bit of a sperg, and his works really aren't that good or interesting, but he's absolutely right. Horror can't be actually disturbing anymore, it has to be sanitized, advertiser safe, "safe-scary" slop, and it's autistic FNAF children and the youtubers who cater to them who ruined it.

i have not yet found a single thing that comes close to petscop in terms of atmosphere and execution. funnily enough, the parody of it, "sheriff domestic", nails a lot of the look and feel down and manages to even be a little interesting on its own when it begins diverging entirely from the source material and parodying other stuff like desert bus.
everyone making these, who are mostly zoomzooms, mostly grew up seeing the success of jumpscares and related types of horror and it's annoying seeing them applied outside FNAF where it works even less. not everything scary should be in your face, what's frightening tends to be subtle and/or unexpected, and when you've seen the 100th "LE KID... LE DEAD" on screen you wonder why is anyone wasting their time making these things.

That first 8 second clip is much more horrifying that most of the analog horrors for several reasons.

• How the fuck are there so many analog horror videos "famous" enough to be included in the tier list maker? I thought I've seen enough of the slop, but I've never seen at least half of these names.
• The one he puts into the top tier in the clip, Dreams of the Insomniac, is made by that Pastra fag from OP and in my humblest of opinions it sucks shit (like most of them). Hard to tell whether it's a matter of trying to suck up to a bigger youtuber, or shit taste.

Seriously, I don't get the obsession. It just feels like it's trying to out-edge Newgrounds classics like Pico's school. Another funny thing is, that despite the second Lacey episode pretty much spelling out how the main character's uncle has been molesting her, I have not seen any hate towards the series in the same vein as the subject of this thread gets. It's funny, I thought the same thing after the first few videos, but I feel it's just reflexive snobbery. That a lot of people like it and think the gore is direct and refreshing is exactly why it's needed and I think it's good for the genre for people to do different things with it, in the same way that 'horror films' span everything between The VVitch and The Terrifier.

Leaving aside the unfairness of comparing it straight to the best (and arguably the only authentic) examples, this is where arguments about taste and simplicity with analogue get a bit silly. Local58 didn't have a villain of sorts, and the link is left ambiguous, but Gemini Home Entertainment's villain is a living alien planet that has infested the entire solar system, controls creatures that wear the skin of humans and imitate their cries and also talks through an 80s home computer. After these two, analogue villains tend to go downhill.



But the main difference is that those stories were cosmological, and necessarily the worldbuilding was done from the ground up, because it's the only way that you can introduce the audience to a story and event of that scale. Even then, by the fourth video, it's just, yep, there's an alien planet here now, and "it's laughing at us." The Painter, by contrast, is solely focused on building a profile of the killer(s) by following them through the carnage they unleash, creating a sense of disembodied urgency that you'd have if you were following it in real life. The nastiness of it may be 'gay' but it is necessary for it to work. I'm not saying it's hidden genius or that it's The Last Jedi of analogue horror, I'm just saying that the line crossing in this instance feels justified and it has a point to it.

I'll say this - it's better than the bloody Walten Files, which despite also having mutilation and dead kids utterly bored the piss out of me.

These things are related. The thing about Local58 was as it was presented it was purely a product of the technology, emphasizing the 'analogue' part. Like found footage, the whole point of the lost media thing is that it has to feel like it's an authentic snapshot from that period from a particular type of media - which is not achieved with the Photoshopped images and Tumblr collages native to the above groups. Predictably it just seems to be accepted no matter how immersion breaking it is: Vita Carnis lost my attention instantly when photographs of anatomy drawings done in pencil and lined paper started popping up during this supposedly ominous presentation.



Really the irony of people saying things like UrbanSpook doesn't know how to do analogue horror - well, if I were being snobbish, I'd say almost none of them qualify as analogue horror, they're basically just animated storyboards filled with tropes and clichés with the occasional doodle of a monster.
