One Piece - I'm Gonna Be the Pirate King!

I have noticed that there is a bit of a dislike for Merphy and Greene. What are the problems with them? Have they had any bad takes? I will say that being a complete normie book fan does change ones perspective alot.
For Merphy, they do not like that she brought parroting tourists to an already tourist infested medium. Many saw One Piece and manga at large as a meal ticket. As for Greene, he is seen as more cringe rather than anything else. I can believe he is fan of Seinen but it is much harder to believe he likes Shonen too.

Totally Not Mark is the most obnoxiously pretentious douche on youtube. His reviews are insufferable. Every one of his reviews is him crying because Goku punching Vegeta is somehow the greatest work of fiction mankind has ever produced.
He might be cringe but he is a fan. You do not need to treat his takes as the honeysweet Word of God himself. I disagree with a lot of his opinions and do have a limit on my tolerance of him but he is still a fan. Maybe not a good reviewer but still a fan of the medium.

Skypiea was the arc that won me over to One Piece for good, but Thriller Bark became an instant favorite of mine. It's just an amalgamation of horror with some Oda twists, and I'm not even a horror fan to begin with. Was never going to go on with the scares, but it sure as hell was gothic. Also has my favorite non-Straw Hat, Perona's in my top five if not my all-time fav.

Absolute perfection.
The "I'm already Negative" bit is on par with Enel finding out Luffy is immune to his electricity.

Juvenile humor can be hilarious, but I think the people not having kids/ not having young children around really fucks with their ability to understand it.
I feel the comedy is in the absurdity of it. "May I see your panties" is not a question people just casually ask and serves to further cement how divorced from reality the series is. It's even more hilarious when characters like Shakky indulges him with answers.

At least, Totally Not Mark was a manga fan since the old times that happened to not have given One Piece a chance yet (it happens, it can feel long, the artstyle is unusual etc etc).
Apparently that was his reason for why he hadn't touched it until recently. He read through JoJo before One Piece and probably the other Shounen Three and figured it was silly to not start it. I also imagine his editor played a huge role in talking him into it, like the editing for those reviews is superb, the dude's finally able to show his love for the series.

In terms of the manga reviews, I really liked the Mama Drawk videos because she's never read manga before nor knew what One Piece was about except that her son cried over a boat, she's a teacher who actively does research, and her predictions were hilariously spot-on in a lot of places. She called Luffy being a sun god/sun-like figure I believe in Jaya, maybe Alabasta just because she obsessively zoned in on the symbolism, and that didn't turn her off from the manga at all. The videos are pretty long so I haven't had the time to return to them since the one that was Sea Train-centric, but I was having a blast hearing her thoughts and her geeking out about folklore.

I'm not the biggest fan of thriller bark but it has so many good moments its hard to hate it. From everything usopp to "nothing happened". I think most the hate stems from it being between enies lobby and sabaody.
It goes on way too long. It’s longer than Marineford and it’s just the Straw Hats fucking around on the boat while they get their shadows stolen. It just drags the fuck on and feels like filler. You have good moments, but the arc is only really good when Kuma arrives.
If you cut down Thriller Bark by 1/4 it wouldn’t be as bad.

Marineford has three parts: Luffy being in Amazon Lily and infiltrating Impel Down, orchestrating the escape with Buggy and the old Warlords, and finally the war at Marineford.
It’s a finale arc, but it’s good even when it drags.

Thriller Bark is the 2nd worst arc, in my opinion. Skypeia is the worst because it starts strong and goes on for fucking ever. You can legitimately skip most of it and you’ll probably be fine because most of the story development by reading Mocktown and the final Enel fight.

Cause they can’t fellate Moria And the content and Treat it like it’s gonna mean something special in 20 years. Spoiler it’s mostly a comedic- adventure.
That’s a big problem with the people coming in now, they’ve got this giant backlog of stuff that paid off over 20 years but don’t give the stuff they haven’t seen pay off yet the time.

I’m convinced he isn’t reacting to half the stuff he says he is for the first time.

Oh, she’s absolute gold. One Piece could honestly do with more voices like her. She really knows what she is talking about.

I'm not getting mad at that, I'm saying they somehow pick this arc to not say everything has an importance all of a sudden, when they make excuses for previous arcs and fangasm "eeee I totally know I'll see this again in 489 chapters/episodes eeee"

Drawk show is obviously not going in each arc blind, they're getting spoiled on all the series. The only reason why someone would say luffy is a sun god way back in alabasta and skypiea when roger is revealed to have been there or other bull if she's already saw the nika fruit bs in wano. Her twink son makes the videos more unwatchable.

A thought recently occurred to me: What if the Straw Hats need Laboon to take them to Laugh Tale?
Highly likely, honestly.

I know. And I’m saying the reason why they say that is with everything else the payoff has already happened. They are going ‘I’ll see it again’ because they already know. Thriller Bark hasn’t paid off yet in full. People acted exactly the same with Skypiea.

Nah. An English Teacher noticing all the sun symbolism and how Luffy is framed by everyone is piss easy.

That he does.

Man, I think you’re the most brutal on One piece in this whole damn thread .

I stopped watching her around Impel Down when she started going on about how Oda is totally for communism and the trans agenda just because of Invakov (a character the left would burn at the stake for not being leftist enough). Like serously, all this was written a decade + ago and it fits with the lunatic far left of today? Or do you think Oda of yesteryear who is from the East would embrace a Western ideology and sensibilities that were not even a thing in the West when he wrote Impel Down? Did he have a time machine or something? Leftist bending spacetime to justify their worldview.

Does she let up with the leftism a bit or should I not bother resume my watch?

Strange thing is, I don't feel the same about Wano for some reason.
Honestly, the Gear 5 reveal may be doing a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to people liking Wano. Also, you had Yamato, everyone’s favorite new waifu and one of the people where everyone is going “new straw hat!”, and the whole land of Wano is based on feudal Japan. And I believe this was also the point where we got the Roger laughing panel. Everyone will find something to like in the Wano arc.

I think that there were too many moving gears in Dressrosa while Wano was big but simpler. I still liked it though.

I'll throw my vote in for Dressrosa. I feel like the Doflamingo fight, and the arc in general, dragged out for way too long.

It didn't help that Mingo was kind of a fucking Pussy and the Donquixote pirates were completely curbstomped by the Straw Hats.

Mingo couldn't stand up against Gear 4th and Pica got utterly destroyed by Zoro, The best parts of Strawhats vs Mingo Pirates were

Pink vs Franky
Usopp doing the Balloon Sniper on Sugar
The final countdown for Luffy getting Gear 4th back.

Wano was way more hype even when it was bad.

It does. As does the Oden flashack, which is where we got the panel, and Yamato in general.

People pretend Wano wasn’t getting constantly shat on until Oden/G5.

Mingo-chan is not the bravest or strongest antagonist but he is the most fleshed out and cunning one. He manipulated a lot of events in order to cause other, stronger people to want to ensure his safety and continued success. And we saw his backstory that explained that his villainy is a result of his insanity, his upbringing and his experiences. That made him a great villain. His speech at Marinfort rings clearer now that we know who he is.

If we're talking about arcs we thought were the worst, I'll throw my vote in for Dressrosa. I feel like the Doflamingo fight, and the arc in general, dragged out for way too long.

Here’s the thing about Dressrosa, the events of the arc take place in like one afternoon. Wano is like a month prefaced by an indeterminate amount of time of the Straw Hat’s infiltrating Wano. Wano itself has its scenes have a proper background. Beyond it being built up in previous arcs there is ground work. Certain Straw Hats interact with the plot and it moves along very well.

Dressrosa is kind of built-up by Punk Hazard, but the characters are one-offs. All of Doffy’s men die and the Marines and Law are more of main characters than anyone else.

Wano has the same shit as Dressrosa, but it’s done a lot better. Wano is effectively an Alabastia, it’s the finale of a saga so it makes some sense. Wano juggles the backstories of multiple characters better than Dressrosa (Law and Doffy have better backstories, but Wano weaves it better), it has each of the Straw Hats contributing better, and ultimately the Guest (?) characters get good development.
