It is all very strange for a man of his age to be in the state that he is in. Jim is a strange person. He also openly talks about his treatments online, he made his own bed by revealing that private information to everyone.

I had a cancer scare several years ago. Turned out to be a nothingburger, easily treatable inflamed lymph nodes, but I became a lay expert in lymphatic cancer in the two weeks it took for the test results to come back from the specialists. Before I knew those results, I read and watched anything and everything on its pathology, its progression, the history of it, the latest research on it, the celebrities who had died from it--you get the idea. You can't imagine the relief I felt when I got word I was okay, that I would live.

The point is many people--myself included--obsessively fixate on the details when under tremendous stress. Focusing on the minutia of the disease and its treatment are a coping mechanism because otherwise all you can think is OH SWEET JESUS I'M A DEAD MAN and shit like that. Very scary. It's all you can do not to cry from the fear of it. Thinking and talking about treatment strategies and so on make it better.

Whatever Jim does, it sounds like he avoided the mistakes made by the cows he's covered over the decade. Out of all of the things I've heard him say over these years, THAT was by far the greatest sadness in his voice I've ever heard. It came from a place of genuine hurt. The summarisation he gave of Baldo was one of utter anguish.
