LawTube - Lawyers sperging at each other on YouTube

Some enterprising reporter should do a deep dive into how many self-appointed “law popes” are not even practicing attorneys. Nick loves to position himself as an innovator, but I suspect he’s far from the only fraud who’s managed to hoodwink people — if only for a while — and part fools with their money online.
None of them are practicing attorneys. Even Barnes and Branca are not (Branca once said Nick is more of a real attorney than he is).

People who go onto YouTube to commentate are people who desire to look like authorities because they are not.

At his height, Nick was probably making a lot more money than he would have even working 40+ hours a week grinding on DUIs and minor crimes, and maybe even at the level of an actual "big city lawyer." It made sense for him not to practice when he could get paid that much just to shoot the shit while doing little to no prep.

The only other real reason for a full time lawyer to stream is to demonstrate their knowledge on some issue where they actually do practice such that people hire you.

Someone like that would be doing fewer and shorter streams.

This isn't really unique to YouTube either. Most of the talking heads you see on mainstream media aren't really practicing much or at all, and those that do are often academics whose main "practice" is stuff like filing amicus briefs for clout, i.e. stuff where they often don't have clients as such.

AttorneyTom still currently practices, which is probably why he hasn't uploaded in a while. You may also find including him under the Lawtube title is a stretch, he did have a few interactions with Nick back when things weren't as bad but he was never really involved with the clique stuff that came to define it. Similarly, I'm pretty sure that Andrea Burkhart still practices, but she also doesn't upload that often. There seems to be a corelation here.

Kurt's comments about why he left his previously employment (he states, falsely in my opinion, his job was 'in law') is interesting.

At 45:57 in the video below, Kurt says "This may sound conceited but I don't really know how to say this in a non-conceited way: I knew everything there was to know about my old job and I had known everything there was to know about my old job for quite a few years. There was nothing left for me to learn."

According to exhibits in the case I posted earlier, Kurt's superiors would beg to differ.

Also, based on the patents filed up to Kurt's last year of employment, he never made Primary Examiner. My understanding is that most Patent Examiners who want that position, earn it within 8 to 10-years. Kurt was at the Patent Office for 14-years.

Thanks for providing me with another stream to watch

Kurt's tantrum at the Patent Office (see the lawsuit on previous page) cost him dearly.

If Kurt had actually learnt from the "clear errors" his superiors identified on his first attempt and tried again, he would likely have made Primary Examiner sometime in, or before, 2016. That's even allowing for Kurt to fail the second part of the program (like he failed the first part) and repeat that too.

By today, Kurt would be at about Step 7 on the 2024 GS-14 payscale (with a 45% loading for Patent Examiners). It's a pretty sweet deal:

- $182 013 p.a. with generous pension, healthcare, and other benefits

- work entirely from home anywhere in the US

- freedom to set your own schedule so long as you work 40 hours per week (many Patent Examiners say it takes less than this to meet the productivity requirements)

- as a Primary Examiner, no one is breathing down your neck

- incredible job security (one Primary Examiner on reddit estimated it would take six-months to get his first official warning if he stopped work entirely)

Instead, after two years of YouTube (defacto unemployment), Kurt regularly complains he struggles to afford basic necessities. He recently said that his health insurance lapsed because he can't afford it.

Damn, what a disaster.
In the video you posted, Soup time part 2... (he barely stirred in the tomato paste at the end, terrible. He should've added it during sauteing, but to be fair, he probably followed a recipe and lots say to dump it into the broth or at the same time as the broth.) lol, spoilered for @Big Miss Steak

...he claimed to be much happier doing YouTube for (substantially) less money. Maybe there is even a hint of truth there, but either way, if he can't convince himself, he can try and convince his viewers.
I only watch Kurt from time to time, but I've heard him mention that he hated the patent examiner job and I always wondered what was so bad about it since without knowing many details about it, it seemed like a good job. I guess maybe he had more personal reasons for not liking it.

I would think that he is correct here. He knew everything that about his current job. Patent examiner is pretty straight forward. That's why they gave him a shot at Primary Examiner. He didn't perform as well at that job but it doesn't take away from the fact they believed he knew his current job and was ready for next one. No reason to think his supervisors thought any different.

Kurts an lolcow just from his own stuff. Not sure where he touched you that you need to actually create FanFic on where his career might have been based on Reddit posts?

I too found Kurt's comments about his previous job curious. He would often say the job was extremely stressful and caused him psychological harm. But other times he would say the job was so easy it no longer challenged him.

Another curiosity was why Kurt concealed the fact he worked as a Patent Examiner. When asked about his work history, Kurt would usually attempt to mislead with statements that were technically true like "I've been a licensed patent attorney for 15 years". When cornered, Kurt would sometimes outright lie.

Also, Kurt has a the term "Patent Examiner" filtered in his chat. You can verify by typing a message with that phrase on his channel.

At first I thought Kurt was just sensitive about not having actually practiced law. Patent Examining doesn't require a law degree and the Patent Office's recruitment brochure focuses on STEM graduates and professionals. Also, the Texas Bar has a process for practising lawyers from other states to join, but Kurt had to resit the bar exam.

After finding the case of Kurt trying to sue the Patent Office and reading the correspondence in the exhibits, though, I suspect that case is another reason Kurt did want people to find out he was a Patent Examiner.

If you're this interested in Kurt, I suggest you write him a thread so the information can all be collected in one place instead of sprawled across the lawtube thread.

It's mind numbing boring. I worked for the US Patent office for like 2 years after getting my engineering degree.

The amount of dumbass ramblings that get submitted by idiots that don't understand the laws of thermodynamics is confounding. And when I was there for a very short period of time, we couldn't just say "yeah...this is a retarded free energy wheel that won't work". You had to go through the motions and basically treat all applications as equally valid.

It's the entire reason why the US Patent office is years, if not decades behind, on clearing the backlog.

Side note, I do think the government made a slight change that very obvious fake shit could be denied faster, but I'm not sure when that was enacted and what that specifically means in practice. The backlog is still there though. This is why you hear "Patent pending" so much.

So not only are you just filing paperwork, about 99% is just retarded shit from weirdo shut-ins. Its worse than working at the DMV. Furthermore, anytime some random person finds out about your job, they start telling you their grand new invention.

"Those are ear buds Dave. You are just describing a product that already exists."

I'm sure that for some people, this job doesn't seem that bad. But for me at least, it was my personal hell. And a lot of the lifers that were shooting for their pensions were miserable to interact with.

Late, but all signs point to zero self-awareness:

I assume "rogue prosecutor" means doing his job vigorously and not going for bribes, easy plea deals, or playing into the judge's ego?

This sounds like a special kind of hell. If they did make this change, is there a third status now? I'd like to imagine them giving you poor bastards three stamps: "accepted", "rejected", and "retarded"

And because of the policy to treat seriously even retarded applications, plenty of junk sellers can use “patent pending” as a sales tool — no inherent worthiness necessary.

Thanks for a fascinating insight into what Patent Examining is actually like at the coal face!

It's certainly possible that Kurt was simply bored with the job for similar reasons you were.

Your description of the job also highlights to me why Patent Examining isn't practicing law. I think that not working as an attorney would have exacerbated any dissatisfaction Kurt was experiencing for other reasons.

By the way, does anyone else think Kurt is looking and sounding better than he has for a long time?

Or is it just some sort of halo effect from my jubilation at the content being covered?

It looks like Nate has good lighting, if Kurt put some money into a decent lighting setup it could tone down some of the redness in his face, it also helps that he's a bit further back and not taking up the whole screen.

No idea as this was after I left. And I wasn't exactly close to anyone there.

Since the benefits are pretty good, I think a lot of people end up feeling not only bored, but utterly trapped. It was one of those places where it seemed like everyone hated the job and each other.

1) Better lighting that doesn't emphasize the redness in his face
2) Kurt isn't sitting half a foot from the camera, which is not only significantly less creepy but doesn't make his dandruff visible or his heavy breathing audible
3) Kurt has someone else to talk with/play off of so he isn't just rambling the whole time

I had to shrink the screen down to minimize Kurt as much as I could because of the amount of white crust on his shirt and overall general lack of cleanliness was making my stomach turn. I had forgotten about that little problem of his but remembered later I had done the same with another except I had to minimize down because he was smothering the screen and so it had to be audio-only... absolutely zero chance I watch any of his shit regularly because of it.
