Retro games and emulation - Discuss retro shit in case you're stuck in the past or a hipster

Changing the gamma looks bad, the newer way to do this is to use HDR to make the visible lines pop.
idk, I think it looks fine.

Honestly. I’m so used to seeing bait and switch woke in modern games that I saw two dark skinned women and what looks like an arab guy in the JRPG game and started wondering if they have pronouns.
Supposedly looking up the games is spoilers, so I assume there's some kind of meta plot or meta game going on? £20 seems a bit steep for what amounts to some NES games. Especially some from genres I don't like. Is it worth buying, should I wait for a sale, or just watch videos and stick to NES roms?

For me, it's the character designs that put me off.

These characters look straight out of tumblr. Maybe the blue guy I could see being from a game back then, but that's just because he's generic boxer man.

Edit: And Kotaku praised the game, calling it the best game of the year.
Yeah I'm out
The character designs are un-80's and you can obviously tell where the developers stand but they kept their traps shut and focused on making a good game for real gamers.
This isn't really a game for normies, there's tons of genuinely hard shit in here which I think is gonna turn off plenty of casual players.
For once, the magazines aren't lying. It's a damn fine collection with a lot of content.

tbh I've been hearing nothing but positive things from people who aren't full of shit. I just assumed it was the usual pixelshit indie retro skinwalker junk because nothing good gets that kind of hype, but now I kinda want to try it.

Sometimes this stuff gets done right. Incidentally Donut Dodo's my 2022 GOTY pick

Xbox One emulation seems to be coming along even faster than PS4 emulation, probably because Xbox One is already so close to a Windows PC

Would be cute to play Crimson Dragon or Rare Replay natively.
That will be huge if it includes 360 through backwards compatibility. Xenia is good, but this would be even better for compatible games.

I wonder why emulation for the PS4/XBONE came out so late compared to Switch emulation (at least in the case of Ryjunix)?, let alone previous gen emulation which came around 2012/13.

If I recall, Nintendo's hardware is the easiest shit to crack while everyone else's is a pain in the ass. In the video he mentions that the XBONE has security in it that makes it tough to crack and is constantly getting updated so it's one step ahead of the hackers.

But this is current year so you also have to take into account that the emulation scene is run by faggots that procrastinate and preach about pronouns and who is allowed to use what code.

The first year or so of Switch models had an unpatchable hardware exploit that gave it a massive head start. And it had exclusives that were actually worth emulating.

If this was years ago i'd be excited solely for rare replay on pc but with the advent of n64 recompilation not so much since every n64 game can be played that way and perfect dark even has a unofficial pc port but the other things might be worth checking out in that collection

still good to have for those who want to play the few xbone exclusives on there I suppose as there are a few games trapped on there that will never see a pc release

Double post because apparently Nintendo is cracking down on Youtube videos talking about Wii U emulation on Android.

Seems almost like every time something happens to make emulation easier for the general public, Apple allowing it on iPhone, Dolphin going into the Steam store, an emulator getting ported to Android, etc there's a big crackdown. Seems like some computer geek downloading an emulator from github doesn't concern them, but anything that makes it more accessible to the masses gets pounced on.

I wonder if it'd be any less likely to be pounced on if they stopped fucking showing Nintendo games front in center in the thumbnails instead of some other console exclusive (A very hard concept in the case of the Wii U I know.)

Yeah, that's exactly it. Broadly it is tolerated as long as it's kept on the downlow and preferably for older systems and not new ones.

On a different note, I think it's time for the emulation/retro games scene to have a non-profit advocacy organisation like the EFF, ACLU or FIRE that helps with these Intimidation tactics and lawfares. The reason I would think it's possible is because:

1. Emulation/Retro Gamers are a niche but strong market (see how many people spend an insane amount of money for CRT TVs)
2. Focused on a specified topic that has only specific laws (e.g. Intellectual Property)
3. Other reasons I haven't thought of while writing this.

The only downside would that there are some egotists and spergs however, I think it's time that (retro) gamers would rise up. Espicially when now Nintendo can just have agreements with the repo manager to delete the github, like what the fuck?

My good, man, it seems that you are unclear as to what the word "niche" really means.

The Music genre of games is niche, as not too many people play that shit, especially after the fad died out once 2010 came along. That and licensing issues is a terminal cancer.

But retro games have been, are, and always will be insanely popular and asked for frequently, whether you are new to gaming or have been around since the Atari/C64 days. Its why game companies hang them like a carrot on a stick to entice suckers to buy their new shit. Its why a fuck ton of indie devs make games in that retro style. Nostalgia is the biggest 'member berries in existence.

Fair enough, I meant niche in the sense it's a lucrative gold mine rather than it being an indie scene.
