Furaffiniy reports 11k active users even during very low-traffic periods (ignore all those "other" users). It's very early here in the US, and most people are at work or in class in Europe, and it's still pulling those numbers. Their prime time numbers are much higher.

Add to it FA's back-end is almost definitely less optimized than IB, and IB's servers are likely running on cheaper hardware than FA because cost (particularly bandwidth) goes up exponentially with performance (and I imagine IB's admins aren't nepotistic morons like Dragoneer was)... and yeah, the cost disparity isn't that odd.

What I'd love to know is how e621's hosting expenses are going. Because IIRC e621 and FA have similar monthly visit numbers (close to 18 million), and both are image hosting services, but their back-ends are completely different.
