When you buy shit tier cigarettes, they usually come poorly filled. This leads to big gaps where the cigarette can start to canoe (it'll burn farther on one side instead of evenly all across the tip) or it'll skip fire further back and you have paper far behind the actual tip start to burn. Packing them forces the tobacco to compress and fill in gaps.

I always smoked unfiltered Camels so this wasn't as needed. Much higher quality with those vs. regular brands.
When I was younger and poorer, anything would do. Had my favorites, camel doublewide unfilitered, but those were rare treats. I mostly smoke a pipe now, but when I do get cigarettes, I usually go for the black AmSpirits. That perique tobacco hits way different, every time I bum a marlboro or a camel off someone it's gone in like 3 drags and I don't feel like I got anything out of it. Those AmSpirit blacks I have to smoke in chunks. Expensive, but more bang for buck. Perique tobacco (Nicotiana Rustica) is like 10x nicotine potency compared to the standard Nicotiana Tabacum in standard ciggies. As far as I know, AmSpirits is the only cig brand allowed to sell Perique blends.
