My main issue with crypto is that I, an American, should be able to give American dollars to another American for any legal good &/or service I want without either of us being fucked with.

Based on watching the last several years of various channels of fundraising Null's attempted, literally no avenue has ever provided a significant fraction of what basic, mainstream card payments do. Too many people are just too lazy to put in the effort to do anything else. Any time he can get money from "normal" transactions it blows all the crypto and money orders and everything else out of the water, until some tranny complains and gets it shut down. Sure, you get the dedicated autists who would send gold coins via carrier pigeon if all else failed, but if there was an Apple Pay option for the site, it would probably make a year's worth of donations overnight.

He should definitely be fighting for his right to use payment processors legally but if he's going to be constantly fucked with it pays to have a little trickle of money coming in from avenues that can't be closed down arbitrarily, than have nothing at all because Square shut everything down

People are lazy but people also love discounts and free shit. I've seen a few shops start giving discounts or free gifts to customers who use crypto. Probably unfeasible for Null at the moment but the idea is there and it's spreading

There isn’t really a better alternative, in the US the problem is really just from the private entities, while anywhere else the government is going to be involved, and almost certainly negatively. Any EU solution is going to be subject to adverse hate speech legislation, Russia and China have their own censorship and overreach issues, and at the end of the day most solutions are subject to the same payment processing cartels in different coats of paint.
