Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

Less of a tech specific trend I guess but I hate, hate, hate working with Indians in programming jobs. If they need or want something they will literally always describe it in the most roundabout way possible. I do not understand it at all.

I'm missing Xfire today. I was scavenging for old credentials of shit I used to use to delete or change to gibberish, and I remembered Xfire. Very much a product of its era, Discord doesn't feel nearly as cozy.

FUCK flat icons AND themes. Boring, unimaginative, sometimes indistinguishable at a glance. Whoever came up with that, kill yourself.

As if smartphone haven't gotten bad enough with Samsung's folding phones, Huawei went "HOLY MY LINGLONG" by making a tri-folded phone, using obviously stolen Samsung technology, and then selling it for a whopping $2800:

Anyone who pays over a couple hundred for a phone is an absolute retard.

Even paying that is kind of dumb.

Having just made a Venmo account, why on God's green earth would I ever want to *share* my payments with the public so they can "like" them? This is a payment app, not a social media service...
dvorak just spent $10 on a fast food order!

Brave is complete ass and a glorified cryptominer (BAT) that runs regardless of your consent. Stop shilling it.
Isn't that an option? Brave doesn't run substantially worse than any other browser I've run. It's probably better than base Chrome at this point in that regard simply because it's de-googled. Don't quote me on that.

The sheer gall of these chinks. Why the fuck would I pay for some chinkware like that? If I want to overpay massively for chinkware made by slave labor it best have an Apple logo on it.

I buy disposable batteries by the ton. Just a fuckton of the Amazon brand AAs, a few nine volts (you know to feed those chirping ceiling birds), AAAs, and a few D cells for flashlights.

And when they run out I THROW THEM IN THE TRASH because FUCK YOU Greta.

Buttons, got a new music player last year ibasso dx170, it's a good player and has button for the basic turn music up, skip, go back, pause and the such. But everything else has to be done on touch screen and is far less intuitive than just having buttons.

On the same note, all high end music players now use android, which is good if you wish to use music apps, but is awful if you main goal like me is to listening to your downloaded collection of music. Just really is bloat, causing it to be less fast to use and costs battery life.

On the battery talk, I love the rechargeable batteries, however the issue is when you can't replace them easily. Old phones and stuff like PSP, could just pop the back off to replace it when ever you need. Now you have to unscrew the back if you are lucky for it have that option and hope it doesn't void your warranty by opening it up.

Probably because lithium ion batteries can swell and maybe explode, they lose the ability to hold a charge after so many charges, devices may not even work without them, and some companies even make the batteries difficult or impossible to remove from device.

How about just using replaceable and rechargeable 18650s? There's also 21700s for higher powered stuff. These days, its mostly used for chink flashlights and vapes.

Hi there Apple you evil fucks.

First of all, this feature, on paper, is supposed to be good at saving fuel whenever the vehicle is not in motion. In practice, however, both from what I've experienced and what I've heard, this feature ends up using MORE gasoline in both the short and long term.
I'd want to hear about this and proofs to such
Secondly, and get this, additional wear and tear is heaped onto the cars battery.
Yes, and start stop battery is about 5 times more expensive. However, batteries die anyway and it's a good way to use it to its end.
Thankfully, one can turn off the stupid start/stop feature on these vehicles, with the downside being that every time you turn on your car, you have to disable the feature.
Start stop doesn't turn on unless engine is warm.
There's a lot of technology making it work, as well as regenerating kinetic energy via alternator to charge internal devices which will result in somewhat useful savings.
The stated savings are due to european or other driving cycles and not really applicable in real life driving conditions.
Stop start only makes sense when you have a hybrid engine imo. If I'm in the city waiting for a gap in traffic, I need to punch it and drive immediately, not after the car turns back on, decides if it's going to let me accelerate at the speed I have requested instead of throw some lights saying computer says no
Engine only shuts down if you put it in neutral. Not really an issue.
For city driving, electric vehicles are superior. Highway, there's almost no difference and the consumption is immense too.

This is on a DSG box, which is a failure in itself, but it's an automatic* and goes into neutral by itself. I can assure you in city driving it is terrible

This fucking gearbox ecu will also shit itself if you park on a hill and need to do a hillstart. Coupled with the fucking electric handbrake not letting you select hill assist WHEN YOU ARE ON A SLOPE.
I have been stuck at the bottom of someone's driveway without room to move at thr bottom because the dumbass car can't figure out how to accelerate from a stop on an incline.

Meanwhile my 1990s TH700r4 literally just works. Zero roll back when stop start traffic on a hill, if I tell it to drive it drives, the only bother I had with that was no drainplug.

(Yes, yes manual transmission master race, I commuted in a 1940s truck with no syncros for years, let me give my knee a break)

Kia managed to one-up their stupid capacitive touch controls for putting both infotainment and HVAC controls on a single bar, by putting a 5 inch HVAC control screen between the cluster display and infotainment display in the new K4 and EV9:

EV9:

K4:

And while the temperature, fan speed, and mode controls still have buttons, the touchscreen being between the steering wheel makes it annoying to use the touchscreen for controls, since turning on defogging and switching recirculated/vented air requires that you use the touchscreen. The touchscreen placement also makes it much more difficult for the passenger to adjust HVAC settings with it.

stupid capacitive touch controls
With non-touchscreen controls, you can find them by feeling around without looking. There's tactile feedback, and controls stay put.

With touchscreen controls, you have to take your eyes off the road to find them. And if you memorize where they are without looking, there's no tactile feedback and the touchscreen could lose sensitivity -- also a software update or hacking could change the layout.

also:

saw this quote and was reminded of the "Internet Of Things":

Perhaps this one is just me becoming more "30-year-old-boomer" by the day, but all current smartphone/tech products are stupid and boring.

One example - while I am certainly no fan of Apple myself, I always watch the Keynotes because I'd like to know what (unfortunately) the rest of the companies in the space are going to start copying, particularly when it comes to removal of features, 3rd party repair limitations and things of that nature. So these new iPhones are just them throwing their hat in the ring for this AI craze that all these companies are obsessing over. Literally doesn't get more boring than that.

Another - I sometimes like to put on random tech reviews for current stuff as background noise while I work at my desk (doing so right now). I had a video playing reviewing the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra. Wasn't really paying attention, then I heard "Now check this out, THIS is why I love the Samsung ecosystem..." so I glanced over to see what it was - it was him using the trackpad on the keyboard case for that tablet, scrolling it to the left, and the cursor appearing on his S24 Ultra screen, so he's holding the phone in his left hand, and moving a cursor around on the trackpad with his right hand. That is quite possibly one of the stupidest most gimmicky things I've ever seen. Who actually does this? This is up there with RED Hydrogen One 3D camera/screen from years ago. Just useless features that nobody will ever use in the real world, and that's supposed to make you want to buy this over an older refurb from a few gens ago for much cheaper?

Last one that I was quite disappointed about - I used to really like OnePlus phones because they were very mod-friendly - you could unlock the bootloader and flash your own stuff very easily. To be fair, in theory you still can, but it seems that since Oppo got them, the tool to reflash the stock firmware for newer models is gone, so there's no way to recover from a brick if you ever mess something up (I've had to recover from a bricked OP8 before), or you want to go from LineageOS back to stock for whatever reason. That's why after the OnePlus 9 line, the modding custom firmware scene for OnePlus is basically dead. So in my eyes, OnePlus went from a phone you can do whatever you want with, to yet another Samsung copy that's seen as cool for some reason.

Maybe I'm the one that just doesn't get it, but nothing about these current phones or computers interest me at all. Exception being the Framework 13 laptop, it looks really cool, is repair friendly, etc. But at $900 to start for the basic one, I'd rather just buy more parts to keep my ThinkPad W530s going for even longer. Lol

That just sounds absolutely horrible. DSG box may also needed to be re-calibrated, with all the other issues it has.
