Very likely what they're planning, but I doubt this is going to work. Github may be owned by Microshit, but it's (sadly) close to tech infrastructure and people did not like the way they proactively locked the accounts involved in the xz-utils drama.
Any precedent for that? That's a completely different website, with completely different goals. Github support is typically very helpful and it's their job, among others, to curb spam. I've never seen them delete any repos other than for DMCA takedowns or something outright illegal. Github is not Reddit.

GitHub absolutely censors. It's not much different from Reddit or Facebook. Banning happens less often because people use it for work and so push the envelope less there.

Not entirely wrong that NFS stock doesn't have SMB style access control nor encryption, but the entire statement ignores that basically for Unix auth for a long time the answer was basically using rsync (or glorified rsync with shell tools) to synchronize configuration files if you were a smallish shop (or Ansible now, which makes it even easier) if you didn't have a huge fleet of shit to keep up with (and if you did you were using LDAP or RADIUS or something similar). I've never woken up and thought "huh NFS is shit, but it wouldn't be shit if I bodged in TLS", and don't understand why anyone would either. If you need to send it across an untrusted network, this is what shit like VPNs are for, and NFS does Kerberos auth anyways. For the target market for NFS, encryption by wrapping in shit like SSL didn't and still doesn't make sense and just pisses on performance.
PAM predates SSH, and I think people were thinking more about regular old login and shit like rsh and telnet back then. PAM was much more intended to allow you to bring in shit like LDAP without needing to recompile everything like your login binaries.
One irony here being the OpenSSH is written in C, and that one of the better things about PAM is not needing some bullshit service you send IPC calls to like every monstrosity using DBus.

While I agree it shouldnt have been banned (though I might be missing some details), 1 incident 11 years ago on a website that has tens of millions of repositories is not that bad and I don't think it woud happen again. These days they only ever delete anything after a valid DMCA, which they treat very restrictively (if you're not a copyright holder or if there's anything wrong with the request they're not going to do anything). They learned their lesson after youtube-dl.
I don't think there's any reason to believe that's true, they're not "pushing" anything. You can add it if you want. Nothing requires you to. There are millions of projects without one.
