and yes, she's an official FEMA employee. her experience before working at FEMA is being one of those annoying theater weirdos at college. a pooner with an art degree is writing training documents for FEMA
In 2021 transitioned into training and development where I became a qualified FEMA instructor and assisted in the creation of over 6 training courses for FEMA staff. Now I work as a Training Manager in the Office of Resilience managing our Resilient & Ready Seminar Series, a twice monthly webinar series that discusses climate change, equity, professional readiness, and FEMA programs.

So, in the midst of various spergouts I might have missed it, but do we have a updated death toll? I guess most, if not all, of the small hollers and creeks have been reached by now?
Deaths: Numbers on fatalities haven't been updated over the weekend.

Contact: Everywhere has at least some form of contact now, whether that be radio, Starlink, or cell service. Even if it's not widespread, someone in each town has a way to communicate with relief officials. As for one house homesteads and mountain folks living in a holler, there's no way of knowing.

The other grim part nobody is really talking about yet, is how many of the dead are virtually unreachable, under literal tons of dirt and rock, buried in one of the numerous landslides. There's absolutely no telling, and there's still no way to tell how many are actually missing but just out of contact. If someone is reported missing, there's really no way to tell if they're actually missing, or if they're in an area with minimal communication and hasn't bothered to tell someone with a radio to tell the unification center where they are, because they have no idea that they've been reported missing.

I figure we'll probably have a much clearer picture by the end of this week. Now that the immediate needs are more or less met, people have food, water, and shelter, even if it's just bottled water and MREs, Red Cross and the like can physically go around and take a census of who is in these towns. The number of missing we have Friday afternoon is likely going to be bodies that haven't been found, as grim as sounds.

It's doable yes I won't argue that, but building a road as part of the immediate disaster relief is a retarded idea. That German man thinks you can just slap a road down here, no big deal
With road access cut to many places, not building roads as part immediate disaster response is retarded.
Don't forget the interstate needs to be 4 lanes of divided limited access highway traffic at minimum and preferably 6 lanes.
Trying to immediately rebuild I-40 to interstate standards instead of 2 9' lanes of travel to start with is the most retarded thing in this thread.

Listen, I have no doubt FEMA is a shitty, corrupt organization, but they're not fucking killing white people on purpose because of "muh diversity". It's because of everything that's been said above.

I love it when comments age like pottery.

The deboonkers and FBI muzzle teams are wasting no time running interference for FEMA's malicious inaction.

I don't live in Hurricane Country, but it astounds me how this storm was able to cause so much devastation so far inland.

Sorry I haven’t posted. I have severe Helene-saturation. I can’t post some of the stuff I’d like to talk about because I would be powerleveling. I don’t want to contribute more to the FEMA discussion - that’s not my M.O. - but all I can say with friends who are volunteering, Joe Q. FEMA Worker has generally been helpful. Whatever issues the bureaucracy has. Take it with a grain of salt, you don’t have to trust an idiot on the Internet.

Positive stories: I did make it into Charlotte this past weekend. I saw SO many linemen, cherry pickers, every conceivable utility truck, up and down the highway in convoys. There’s a deep, abiding sadness covering this state, but there’s also the almost rabid need to help, even onto the widow’s mite. You see poor people at a drop off site giving bottled water and whatever granola bars they could grab from the dollar store. Kids willingly giving up clothes and blankies to little ones in need. For every bad story you hear, there’s at least five good ones.

Also, I guarantee there’s never going to be a perfect missing person count. People forget there’s hollers, shacks, lean-tos, hidden passages through the mountains that are full of folks who could go missing and no one would know. There will be bones in the mountains that’ll rest there until the Last Day. I wonder if we should just let nature take back whatever can’t be salvaged.

Also, I had the misfortune of being there at the same time as Kamala. Even lefty friends were gritting teeth with the sentiment of “just stay the fuck away”. FWIW.

I have feel good stuff to post but I sincerely need a break from this shit. Gimme a day of laughing at lolcows or whatever.

2-3 FEET of rain in some places in already rain soaked ground, all washing down the mountains into the hollers, gullies, and valleys. Making every small mountain creek and river in to a 20+ foot wall of water and debris rushing down the valleys pulverizing everything in its path. This disaster is something the area had likely never seen before and might not ever again.

Look at the topography of chimney rock area and how it just funnels water down that valley.

Officials opened up Marshall, NC for clean up to begin. Workers and volunteers have run into an unexpected development. Their waders and muck boots are melting in the mud. No one knows what is causing the reaction or where it originates. For reference, Marshall is directly downriver from Asheville. (French Broad)
There will be bodies unearthed for a long time to come. It will take several really heavy rains to dislodge bodies entangled in debris underwater. Some will never be found. If you're in the area, do not go for a hike to "get away from it all" if you're not capable of tagging a geolocation and keeping a clear head. The probability of stumbling across a body is high. Keep your dogs on leashes, ffs. If you want to see nature to escape, head towards Big Sand Mush/ Little Sandy Mush area or Franklin/ Sylva. Stop at the local stores and verify untouched areas.
The toll on workers and volunteers is visible. Especially when you find the body of a kid. I will say, though, that it always amazes me how disasters like this forge communities out of strangers.
The Postal Service is refusing to deliver contracted stops received through private logistic firms. Not sure when they'll be forced to resume those deliveries. Soon, hopefully, as there are trailers full of packages and mail. Medications and satellite communication equipment is excluded from their shenanigans and are being routed to their intended recipients.
The helicopter sweeps of areas surrounding Asheville are continuing. The military is visible and welcome. Civilian volunteer opportunities (through organizations) are limited to food distribution. Donations of food, clothing, blood and funds remain the most effective and safe way to help relief efforts.
Buncombe County and the City of Asheville are attempting to relieve the household garbage issue. The neighborhoods smell of rotting food waste, baby diapers and the like. It can seem like there are more bears in Asheville than outside of it, and having copious amounts of garbage isn't helping to keep the bears away. lol (mother bears tend to bring their young into town and away from the males in the mountains. If you wanted to see a bear, Town Mountain was where you'd head.)

*edit for clarity

"They aren't trying to kill White people/conservatives! That's a conspiracy!"

If I had musk level money, I would be developing airships. No roads? No problem. Slow and steady low altitude hover over anywhere you like, drop off supplies down a line, massive lift capability. Shove a few starlings on them as well and you start to put the communication infrastructure in the sky rather than on the ground and you can move it wherever
Why on earth aren’t airships a thing? Blimps would be so useful here. I bet you could even use them as rescue platforms
