Hurricane Milton

That means almost everywhere can flood catastrophically including far from the shore.
I missed this, but i want to add that while sort of true there's two things to consider. One is that in NE FL at least there's a stupendously good amount of civil planning around drainage. I've seldom in the times I've been in the area during such storms ever seen it actually 'flood' like in other states, don't really know about Tampa or south of it though. The second is that the more accurate comparison is a sponge. I'm not sure and tbh I probably should look into it considering... you know... but sinkholes and such are probably more of a danger in some areas than flooding given how most of the state is porous limestone.

Yeah, disagree about this bit, maybe just leave.
There isn't anywhere to go if you haven't left yet. The entire bay area was gridlocked for the past day. The only thing to do is to drive to another part of the state that MIGHT get a lesser effect, but the eye could land anywhere from Cedar Key to Fort Myers. The hotels are already full on the east coast, over in most of Gerogia, and south to Miami. Even south will have extra water coming in. The entire area is spooked, Helene was terrible but a damn good warning for everyone else in the state.

Fuck me...glad my family moved out of that shit hole after Andrew when I was still younger. Seeing this hit my old home town rather directly makes me feel a certain way...mainly that I'm glad I was too young to make lasting friendships there and my godparents(rest their souls) managed to escape before florida man started to really become a thing. Thoughts with all those going to be affected, I don't wish the aftermath and chaos on any of you farmers.

Southern Florida kiwi here, I’m staying since my area is far enough away from the cone that I think I’ll be fine. I live somewhat inland too so I’ll just sit this one out. I fell that the non-Florida kiwis sperging about how all of Florida is in danger are exaggerating things a tad bit.
Don't die.

Kind of a minor detail, but the House of Mouse is in the dead center of the current forecast cone:

Despite being built in the center of Florida, I don't think the Disney parks have ever had a direct hit from a hurricane, especially not one this powerful. It'll be interesting to see what happens there. I hope some soytuber makes a "STAYING AT DISNEY DURING A HURRICANE!!! (CRAZY)" video.
I hope that it’s Adam The Woo and he gets pushed into the sea.

"How can I make this about racism?"
But I thought da BIG BAD GUBMINT WEATHER CONTROL MACHINES existed to murder white people so they could fill the mountains with cat-eating black people? Why would they hurt poor Mexican PoCs like this? I didn't know they'd go that far just to kill a theoretically white person like Ralph.

The "The storm is approaching the upper limit of what Earth's atmosphere can theoretically produce." part of the highlight seems pretty bad, anybody got the source? I want to read more.
I saw this screenshot from this guy on twitter. I have no idea who he is, but the pic makes me think local news weather man.

Oh holy shit, I forgot about the sinkholes. Florida real estate is...interesting.

That's what I'm hearing from my contacts.

If you got out of Tampa yesterday, you'd want to head for Alabama to find a hotel. But right now it's too dicey to try to get out of Florida unless you have several full gas cans plus a full gas tank in your car. Probably safer to get to the best local shelter instead.

We're looking at possible wind shear shredding it down too.

Hell, this could be an Ian situation: it is predicted to slam into Tampa.... then six hours before Ian hit, it decided Ft. Myers was more interesting and floated that way.
Helene being so certain was pretty amazing, usually it is more like watching your drunk friend spin around the room and seeing which part of the furniture catches him first. You might be able to predict his path, but he might surprise you by tripping on something you didn't see or going father than expected. It's mean but it is how they usually operate.

Lastly, the hurricane is still more compact. The windfield is smaller than Helene, and it isn't the same type of awful. Sure, it WILL be terrible, but it is a different type of terrible.

It's been rainy and humid for so long I have to constantly watch out when I do shit outside* around the house on hard surfaces to not step on snails. My house is covered in snails. They did not tell me I lived in a snail-congregation zone prior to my home purchase. Insurance does not cover this bullshit.

Do your research. Don't be covered in snails.
