I'm pretty sure turning an MRI machine off and back on is a really complicated process that they don't do unless they have to. It takes a lot of time to get the cooling stuff to be cold enough etc.

Edit: yep I googled it - if you shut it down you have to replace the helium it uses and that can cost thousands of dollars.

The tech who runs the MRI machine is also expensive, but on a per-hour basis. (So is the radiologist, but they can be anywhere on the planet that has Internet.)

I'm inclined to think her story could go either way. It's a big city hospital, but OTOH healthcare staffing is pretty wild these days. They might indeed have odd hours with no MRI staffing, or there could be times when it's only staffed with on-call and nobody is worried enough about her to want to pay callback to the tech. Also because it's a big city, if their radiology department truly is a ghost town, they could EMTALA her a few miles to a hospital where the MRI is manned, if they really really thought she needed it.

If the MRI is inaccessible for certain times, they aren't completely shutting the MRI machine down, just not actively using it for hours/a shift. Like @a tightly clenched butt said, the ramp-up takes a long time. Machine's just sleeping. They don't hit that "quench" button unless someone's pinned to the magnet like a report card.

Of course, Victoria could be embellishing with a story from the past; she's probably had more MRIs than someone three times her age, so if she hit a staffing hiccup once, now it's in her repertoire for any time she needs to thumb-tap out a little more drama.
