Also that was a good play. It made Aliens a smash hit. You can't have a rollercoaster style action movie without more overt badassery than you get in what the original was, which is basically a 19th Century gothic novel but in SPAAAAAAAAAAACE.

Yes, being a professional and knowing your gear and skills well enough to keep your head in a crisis IS badass, but Ripley wasn't an over-the-top BADASSWOMANGIRLBOSS in the first movie.
I disagree with Aliens being shit, but I do see where you're coming from. Making her an action hero made her a lot less interesting as a human being. Action heroes are less interesting as human beings, because they all tend to speak the same language: that of violence and triumph. Ellen Ripley attempted violence in Alien, but quick thinking and a bit of luck is what actually saved her. And she triumphed, but it was a Pyrrhic victory, with every other member of the crew wiped out, the ship destroyed, and her life and career ruined upon her return. She was a human being. In Aliens, though she has some very human moments, she’s not. She becomes a powerful force in her own right, which can be fun, but can’t as easily be cared about.
Aliens is shit. It is James Cuckmeron's dominant woman fetish and soy feminism wrapped up in a badly-written, artlessly directed, braindead action movie. Plus he also fucked up the Xenomorph with his insistence on redesigning it to be more insectile.
I thought it was a really solid action movie. I still think the first movie was the superior incarnation of the franchise, but have nothing against Aliens.
It also has Bill Paxton in it and he's hilarious.
I can watch Bill Paxton be hilarious in far better movies.
