Nick had no reason not to go to a standard inpatient residential 30-day program. He lives 2 hours from one of the best/ best-known rehab/recovery centers in the nation. It also has satellite programs in other towns though idr if any of them are inpatient. But beyond Hazelden, there are loads of other options. There are two for sure within 90-100 minutes (aka, an hour, at Nick's driving speeds) of him. Fuck it there are a ton right in and around Willmar.

i was speaking to a friend who is a build about his thoughts. He said a room is just a room and he doesn’t care what goes on in it after he’s finished building, but if he’s asked to cut corners that could lead to structural damage or lead to someone dying if a fire breaks out then he’d turn the job down,

So it won’t have been because contractors are lazy or Scandinavian prudes, it will be because Nick will have been coked out of his nut and demanding dumb shit and thinking he knows better than a builder.

He probably wouldn't have been 'required'. He would have been told that he stood no chance at all of regaining custody of his kids unless he completed one of their approved treatment programmes. I imagine that they would have had certain attendance requirements you'd be obliged to fulfil in order to qualify, but the fact that he was able to complete it 'extra fast' by attending multiple times a week inclines me to the view that it was nothing more than a box ticking exercise.

A properly structured programme would surely have different content planned for each of the days you were required to attend. And there's something about the importance of time in drug/alcohol treatment -- the more clean time you have under your belt, the better your chances of recovery. It's why the 12 step fellowship place all that importance on chips and keyrings that mark the number of days.

But hey, it's an industry run by shysters for shysters. Good programmes are few and far between.
