Is there any hard evidence of this? It seems likely and all, it's extremely suspect that Biden dropped out via tweet days before he was seen in public making any kind of concession statement, but I haven't seen any positive evidence for it.

Remember the rumors of the bad medical accident in Las Vegas shortly before Biden dropped out, then you had the tweet before he was seen in public again. There's no hard evidence, but there's enough to read between the lines.

This lunatic just wants to abolish the electoral college so Chicago, New York City, and the coastal cities of California, Oregon, and Washington State can decide the outcome of every Presidential election going forward. It's to 'protect our DEMOCRACY!'. They can't have those pesky states like....Wyoming, or, *scoff* Utah, have a say in deciding who wins the Presidency! They're uneducated backwoods hicks that would hurt themselves because they don't know any better.

What the coasts fail to realize is that if it's pure popular vote is that there's no reason for Flyover Country to be in the same union as them. The Electoral College means that those states still have a voice and that's the only thing keeping them there.

That seems like a bad idea. Trump has shown a remarkable talent for making lemons into lemonade. I'd expect such an action to make people rally around Trump even more; if the rug gets pulled right as he's taking office it clearly isn't his fault and he'll be best positioned to help people deal with the fallout.

What would happen if both canidates die before the election, with days to go? Is there any way for Congress or whoever to make, like, a special election or something?

We don't know. It would cause a Constitutional Crisis.
The closest we ever came to this happening was in the election of 1872, where Horace Greeley died after the election but before the electoral votes were counted, which caused all of his votes to get split between 4 different people.
It didn't matter since Grant won against Greeley anyways, but we could have a clusterfuck on a significantly worse level if Trump wins the election but dies before the inauguration.
If they get enough electors to back somebody else instead of Vance (this actually happened in 1872, Greeley's running mate ended up in third place overall) so that no candidate gets 270, the election is decided by the house, who doesn't do a direct vote, but rather has each state's representatives come to a consensus on what candidate their state will back.

The problem here is that you need a 26 State majority to win. Looking at the party lineup of each state and assuming everyone would vote party line, we have exactly 26 Republican States and 22 Democrat states, with Minnesota and North Carolina tied. Vance should win in this case, but some of these margins are razor thin with only a slight Republican majority. It would only take a few RINOs at most to drop Vance's share down to 25 or lower, and then we end up in a Constitutional Crisis. Note that Kamala can't win this way, Democrats wouldn't be able to realistically achieve the 26 State majority, this would just be a massive fuck you and an attempt to start Civil War.

EDIT: Another aspect I completely forgot to mention is Vice President-elect. In fact, this might matter more. If we can't come up with a majority of states for the actual President by inauguration day, then the VP-elect becomes acting President until the deadlock is resolved. The VP-elect in this case would be decided by the Senate, who picks between the two VP candidates with the highest votes. With the Senate having a Democrat majority at the moment, this would cause a serious possibility of "acting President Walz".
